possible to recover from a brick?

My friend has an epic 4G touch that was rooted and running a custom rom. He got a notification about a system update and he accepted it. Now his phone won't boot at all. It won't boot into recovery or even download mode.

Is it possible to fix this or is he screwed?

Take off the battery for 5 minutes. Pit it back and try download mode.
Otherwise u r le brick'd

System update not going through will not brick. Are you sure you are holding power and volume up for recovery? And power plus volume down for download mode?
