I used it around one and half year back so don't remember now using android 7.1

You can get assistant working by editing your build prop. You can Google to find more.

Hey,
Its quite simple actually. You don't need to edit any build prop or anything.

First: You need a rooted ROM.

Second: You need Xposed Framework on your device. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3034811

Third: You need to have Google Now Beta. Not the regular one. So enroll in Beta program or use Google for beta apk.

Fourth: Now you need to install "Assistant Enabler" module from Xposed. http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/xposed-assistant-enabler-enable-google-t3479587

The module is self explanatory so you just need to follow the instruction given in the thread. You can also try it with AndroidN-ify, but it didn't worked for me.
