So every time someone calls the screen goes into vertical letter box phone mode for me. Sometimes after the call it goes back to normal when backing out of the call log, other times it doesn't.
I've found that just bumping the desk with your knee moves it enough that it recognizes it's horizontal and switches the display accordingly.
I'm only mentioning it because it took me this long to figure it out, so I figure others might benefit from it as well.
