Good point,

Multiple reasons, first and foremost I needed a new phone ASAP and google isn't shipping for 5-6 weeks on the XL 128. I'm due for an upgrade and got it on payment plan. and I was really under the impression I could get it unlocked... I guess I'll have to suck the restocking fee, spend some more on a new battery for my M8 and wait 5 to 6 weeks after paying full retail price outright... or go with a different phone, maybe one that can screencast to devices other than chromecast without need for root tweaks to mention one of the turnoffs of where android is going....

Sorry, I'm a little turned off by the latest direction devices have taken...
fyi
pixels allow free unlimited storage for pics (for now)
via google photos
photos tend to be a big storage drain for folks
if this is the case for u
may be worth considering the pixel
instead of pixel xl
believe those r available via google store
and obvi cheaper than xl
:)

Yes, if you want to unlock the device you better return it before the 15 day period runs out. I think there is a trade off on all android devices now. Pixel and XL have a great camera and decent battery life. Other that the wonks on XDA I think that's mostly what Google is going for. They'll allow you to unlock the Google version but, as you can see, Verizon customers don't give a crap about unlocking. They can't even keep the phones in stock.

I also believe they are trying to focus more on security these days. Too many hacks and theft of sensitive information. Everyone has a phone now and they are ripe for stealing off them. If carriers simply allow devices to be bootloader unlocked they are vulnerable. I'm actually surprised TM or ATT sell unlockable devices. Only will take one major lawsuit for that to be closed. But at least with carrier unlock the law of the land then Google can sell their devices with oem unlock operational. But also see how on Black Friday or Christmas sales that the carriers had some really great deals. $240 and around $300 for the XL over 2 years. Google never gave one cent off their price.

Anyway, good luck on your purchase. It might be nice if carriers clearly stated they can't be bootloader unlocked although I doubt anyone would know wtf that meant if they weren't a flash-aholic. Kind of reminds me of Apple. There is no such thing with their phones unless you jail break them. Kind of like rooting, not many know what it means and they would never do it.

If you are have a phone from Verizon it is required to have unlocked bootloader to obtain root.
So if it is a Verizon phone and you take 7.1.1 update - you won't be able to get root
Do you possibly know of a way to downgrade back to an Android version that could be unlocked/rooted for the Verizon Pixel? (if thats even possible)

Hmm maybe you could upgrade to Android developer preview then use a recovery package to downgrade back to stock ? Then unlock bootloader?
has something like that ever been done before and been known to work? i'm a bit inept at this **** lol but i can at least follow instructions pretty well if there are any for this kinda situation

I tried that and it didnt work, because its not like the nexus when they made you download the full factory image... Here they just send you a 300mb file to downgrade and deletes your data... But thats all

Verizon Pixel

Today I picked up a Pixel from verizon. When I went into the store they pulled out three of the boxes to show me them to pick a color. Surprisingly they had the dates they received the phones. They had two that were marked for January and I picked one of them. I turned the phone on and it was still at 7.1! I had to kill the auto update real quick but I took it home and ran depixel8 and all is good now. Maybe some others looking into getting a pixel from VZW could try this out too.

So I chatted with Google about this rumors of people trading thier Verizon phone for refurbished Google store versions. This not true do not waste your time. Google refused to send me a different device, stated " if you want to send us your Verizon model for replacement it will be replaced with a Verizon model." Google said if I have Verizon deactivate the phone on the network ie: turn an old phone back on during this process as to keep your Verizon account. Once deactivated phone will be carrier unlocked (phone must be paid off) then when you insert a sim card from another carrier it will make available OEM unlock in developer settings!! Then you can install twrp and reinsert Verizon sim and poof you have unlock bootloader, custom recovery/root. Can anyone please confirm this works. I cannot as my phone is not paid off and Verizon will not deactivate it from there network.
