So, is there a way I can get onto this Kitkat release and also encrypt my phone?
You can go the route I did for corp email and use Touchdown. It encrypts only the app data and any downloads so you don't have to encrypt the entire phone. I had issues getting my encryption to work on stock note 3 when I bought it so I bit the bullet for TD.

So what is the process you took to use TD?

1. Root phone
2. encrypt with TD
3. Add activesync account

TD doesn't actually encrypt the entire phone, only its own app data and any attachments you download. It more or less exists as its own little encrypted world on your phone. The other nice thing about this is touchdown will enforce a PIN only for the app if your activesync forces a PIN. That way I can have tasker turn off my screen lock PIN when I'm at home. ;)

All you have to do is download the app (I wouldn't buy the key yet until you're sure it works for you) then use your setup info for activesync to create a touchdown acct on the phone. It will have a PIN for the app (if required), encryption, etc.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:

If you've installed the new Kitkat leak for the Verizon Note 3 (and you really really should install it -- see below for reasons why):

MAKE SURE YOU NEVER TAKE ANY OTA.

Here is a brief (and yet startling) list of advantages to the leaked Kitkat build that could be done away with in ANY future OTA for the Note 3:
  • At anytime you can use ODIN to go back to 4.3 for root, disaster recovery etc.
  • This leaked Kitkat build allows for *ANY* compatible kernel module to be used. Unlike any previous Note 3 build ever. No whitelist security is in place to block kernel modules which are not "approved". (pointed out by @ryanbg)
  • It's Kitkat but SElinux permissive. Also very very rare.

There are so many unique things about this build, that every user who installs it should treat it like gold and avoid OTAs like the plague.

For more information on the leak:
http://sxtpdevelopers.com/samsung-galaxy-note-3-verizon/

How to maintain root and use the leaked files:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2726558

And a new Safestrap for use with the new KK build (you'll need a 4.3 compatible Safestrap for the root process and a 4.4 compatible Safestrap for use after upating):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517610

If you ever get a chance make sure to send thanks over to sxtpdevelopers (I don't think he has an XDA username anymore).
So being that we will be flashing via odin will that trip knox? I know annoying question but I can't find any answer on it in regards to this update, and I'm new to this whole knox thing, and what will and won't trip it.

Knox is not tripped. This leak is amazing. We can actually odin back to stock by flashing the mje tar in odin. Knox is never messed with

4.4.2 (this build) questions wifi and mobile data

In this build, after installing to my note 3 as per instructions? I noticed that the wifi and mobile data seem to be both active, or, after turning on wifi the mobile data does not seem to turn off, and in some cases internet traffic seems to be routed on both networks - this is odd behavior, as in previous releases when wifi is turned on naturally mobile data turns off.

so, is mobile data still engaged even with wifi actively connected? if so, there is something wrong in two senses -

a. mobile data is still being used, reducing monthly allocation of data - this is bad
b. with both networks on, is there a privacy / security risk?

Thanks

In the advanced wifi settings there is a option to have it use any network available. It seems odd because the behavior it describes seems like how it's always been. It uses wifi when it can and switches automatically to cellular data when wifi isn't available. Why there is a setting that seems to give you the same default option is beyond me. It's probably something to do with the download booster option available in new Samsung devices, that will actually use BOTH data streams in parallel to speed up downloads over 30MB.

AFAIK, vzw devices never got that booster.
