Sorry for the noob question but I think somewhere in my android journey I've got the wrong idea.

I used to have an HTC legend, which was S-ON (damn HBOOT version). At one point I wanted to install a few apps to sys (apps already on sys that had updates etc, and I was running out of space in data) and the only way to do it was to reboot into recovery and adb in. I assumed at the time this was because it was S-ON.

Now I've got a lovely One X, which I've just installed CM10 on. I have also installed the app "Secure Settings" as I want to be able to turn the GPS on and off via Tasker. to do this Secure settings installs a "helper" application to sys... which I assumed I was going to have to do manually by booting recovery and adb. But No! Secure settings was apparently able to just remount sys as r/w and install it right in there!

so presumably S-ON isn't what was stopping me writing to sys on the legend, that must have been something else?
