So I was talking to my Provider today and they have a new unlimited data plan and the Rogers Rep said the unlimited data does not count with tethering. Now if I was smart I would have inquired more as to what she meant but...

So my question is to anyone who may know it: How does a provider know when you are tethering?

Normally, they make you use their app, which is tracked by the carrier. Easiest way to get around this is to download another tethering app from the Market.

That depends on your data plan. If the contract says "you shan't do it" then it's illegal.

If your provider will ever find out if you do is another thing.

Just out of curiosity, those unlimited data plans, how much do you pay? And is that really unlimited data with full speed? In Germany you almost always get traffic based flats. For example 5gb/month for 15€ and if you go over that amount speed will drop to 2kbyte/s... like in the days of 28k modems. ;)
