I'm on MF1. Does anyone know what will happen if I flash to ML2 without the ML2 bootloader?

I don't think it will boot. What you can do however is flash MI2 (which is the leaked version of 4.3 with a more open bootloader), then flash ML2 on top of that. This will give you ML2, but you will still have an old bootloader so you can always flash back to MF1 if you want. Read this for a little more info. I haven't tried it personally but people are reporting that it works.

I don't think anything bad would happen if you do what you are suggesting, and personally I'd be interested to see if it would work. I don't know that anybody has tried it. If something does go wrong, you have the Odin for MF1, so you can always recover from any soft bricks.
