Right, so after I upgraded to an Xperia Play I sold my brother my old Aria, and some time later gave him the Sony-Ericsson branded earbuds/headset that came with the Xperia Play after he broke his headphones. It's a single-button pair of earbuds/headset with a mic hole right by the button, unlike the three-button HTC headset.

Technically it works with music apps; you plug it in and play your music, and sound comes out both ears. However, it's not quite right - from what I can tell it plays one channel by default, and only plays the other while the button is held down. I tested it with my phone last time I was over there, and on the Xperia Play it just acts as a play/pause button in media apps. Is there some software solution to at least make them work like a normal pair of earbuds without holding the button, or is it some matter of incompatible hardware?

For what it's worth, the phone was wiped and flashed with CM7 before I gave it to him, and I've tested the issue with the stock audio player and Winamp. Sorry if this or a similar question has been asked before, I'll admit I didn't spend too much time looking.
