try setting the Aria data comm to Edge only

I will try this, but my phones (I have 2 Arias) reboot even without the SIM card installed and are therefore not logging onto an ATT network, or any network for that matter.

Both phones are unlocked and I have T-Mobile and European SIM cards. I will also trying booting the phone on a different service and see what happens.

HTC has advanced my situation to "escalated" repair for a 4th attempt to fix the random reboot problem.

The GSM only setting described above did not work for me. The repair representative checked the records and found that they replaced the mother board again, she also said they would probably send me a new phone this time. Isn't the mother board essentially the whole phone? What's left when you take out the mother board? Whatever is left must be the source of the problem.

My other phone is out of warranty. If they send me a new phone I guess we'll never know what the problem is. I won't dare be using the same sim card, sd card or battery in the new phone!

Anyone have any suggestions of where I could send my other out-of-warranty phone for repair?

Fixed (I think)

My Aria has not rebooted for 12 hours! Problem was solved by inserting a new SIM card, which is baffling since the phone now does not reboot when I remove the SIM card. First I used a T-Mobile SIM -- I did not want to somehow contaminate my new AT&T SIM. I left the T-Mobile SIM in over night and no reboots. I then felt confident in using my AT&T SIM, still no rebooting.

Somehow the last SIM card inserted effects the way the phone works even when the SIM is subsequently removed.

Interesting that a SIM card could impact the way the phone works even after it is removed. Any thoughts?

I'm baffled, I have given up hope on fixing my phone as I have a preorder in for the S3 but very good job finding out what appears to be the root of the problem. Keep us updated if it still goes strong without a reboot.

Have you tried another SIM card? If you go to an AT&T shop and explain the problem they will give you a new SIM and set it up at no charge. It would be a good test of if the SIM is in fact the problem.

Reboot and SIM card

I have now tested this for 2 days. All random rebooting has completely stopped with the new SIM card. My initial observation that it also stopped rebooting with the SIM card removed was wrong -- I still get random rebooting when I use the phones without a SIM. Both of my Aria behave exactly the same way, rooted or not; and, CM7, CM9 and stock ROMs.

My conclusion, the rebooting was somehow related to the SIM card. I still have absolutely no idea why both phones still randomly reboot without SIM cards. And one of the phones had been "repaired" by HTC who claim they installed a new mother board. I believe them because the phone I sent in for repair was SIM unlocked and the one I got back is SIM locked.

Aria loop reboot

was searchin web to find any solution about Aria constant reboots. still nothing helpful, except exchange phone for a new one at HTC.
somebody at http://www.htcariaforum.com/troubleshooting-htc-aria/htc-aria-keeps-rebooting/
claims:

I was told that too, about the SD card. I finally just sent the phone off to HTC and they repaired it and sent it back and since then no unwanted reboots. They didn't tell me what the problem was though. Oh well, at least it works.

for now, guess, only the way to get working device

I'm curious to see if this is a software problem... has anyone managed to get a logcat when it reboots?
There is one library for the radio that hasn't changed (libhtc_ril.so). Stock 2.2, CM7, and CM9 all have the same one.
The marvel ("Wildfire S") has official Gingerbread, and might have a newer version of it.. (can't check right now)

I might try taking my SIM out for awhile and see if it happens..
Edit: Yep, it does

Thanks for testing this. You are the first to confirm my observation about the random reboot problem and the SIM. For some reason my experience appeared to be related to my original ATT SIM. I also have an Atrix 4G and it rebooted with the ATT SIM I was using in the ARIA. I took it to ATT and got a new SIM and the Atrix stopped rebooting. The same for my ARIA. I have also tried a T-Mobile, a European SIM I had from traveling and an un-activated ATT SIM, and the ARIA does not reboot with these SIMs installed. But it does when running without a SIM.

This is not really a problem as long as you keep any SIM in the phone. But it is a curious problem.

Aria Random Reboots & SIM card

I "decommissioned" my Aria awhile ago and decided recently to use it strictly as an Android media playing device. I figured it would be fine to just use WiFi and not have a SIM card in the phone. But I experienced the rebooting issue as well, and tested at least three different ROMS. The phone was rooted using Revolutionary and has a 32GB SD card. After failing to find a ROM that worked, I ended up finally going to an AT&T store to get an unprogrammed SIM just to have one physically in the phone.

Putting in the SIM fixed the rebooting issue.

Well, tried it (libhtc_ril from marvel), didn't help :-\

I wonder if it is a location thing. You don't happen to reside in SE Pennsylvania do you?
This is interesting because I have sold on eBay fully functional Aria to a person from SE Pennsylvania which claims that the phone reboots on its own. My wife never had any issue with that Aria almost 2 years

Tell him to get a new sim card from at&t. My experience is that this will stop the reboot problem, but THE PHONE WILL STILL REBOOT WITHOUT A SIM CARD INSTALLED.

Thanks, I will provide that suggestion. Also it is strange that it will reboot without a SIM card installed

I agree. It is strange that the reboot thing only happens without a sim card. But those with a lot more knowledge than me - such as developer WinSuk - have noticed the same phenomena. It apparently is related to an earlier AT&T sim card.

so just found this thread as i was experiencing the random reboot. I had turned on my phone with no sim just to do the reset before selling it. I no longer have service with att.

so if i have an OLD att sim/non working- will that stop the reboot?

I'll assume if I sell this and someone puts a working att sim it would work fine?

The SIM doesn't have to be active (i.e., you don't have to be paying for service), but the SIM card needs to be relatively new -- probably needs to be one of the ones that supports LTE is my guess (even though the phone doesn't support LTE).

And yeah, the reboots will go away if whoever you sell it to puts a recent SIM in the phone.

Needs to support 3g. My last sim was a 3g in my aria. Never got a reboot. They gave me a 4g lte card with my new phone
