[Q] Atrix doesn't detect 5GHz 802.11n network. What do?

So my Atrix can detect the n-network when the channel is set to ~2Ghz, but it won't detect the 5GHz one. Isn't the frequency of the channel what makes the n-network special?

I believe that the only advange 5GHz has over 2.4GHz, is that the 2.4GHz space is more crowded, but as long as you don't suffer from interference there, you should be fine.

It does detect 5GHz but it's weak when it's too away from the router far compare to 2.4 GHz.

That's the problem. Where I'm situated there's at least 1 wireless network in every single channel.

I'm only 3 meters and 1 wall away from my router.

I got the same problem. My router has dual broadcast of N and G. The phone sees N when I'm in the same room as the router but nowhere else. The G works fine everywhere.

@txtsd - what sort of router are you using? Can you not see the network at all when it's set to 5GHz broadcast?

The frequency isn't so much what makes N "special" as 802.11A was also in the 5GHz band. What makes it special is the multipath used to increase signal reception (normally multipath is a bad thing in RF).

I'm using a Netgear WNDR3300, with dd-wrt on it. I can access the 5GHz network with my laptop, so I know it's functioning.

I have the same router with DD-WRT and the same problem. I have switched to a 2.4ghz network and back to 5ghz and it works properly until I disconnect.

With regards to DD-WRT or router compatibility with Atrix, if I'm connected to my Asus RT-N16 running dd-wrt @ 2.4GHz N, phone frequently loses the connection, but if I use my pocket router (Linksys WRT54GS, running stock firmware) connection is rock solid.

So I think Atrix simply does not "like" some of the wi-fi routers out there, or maybe it does not like fat channels (40Mhz wide channels on N for 300mbit connections), or it is too susceptible to interference.

I have been using the 5ghz band via Netgear's WNDR37AV Dual Band Gigabit Wireless gaming & Video router for a week now w/o issue. The only thing I have noticed is sometimes my Market says, timed out retry? I experienced the same message during testing on the 2.4ghz band, and I have experienced the same message on Att's data network. (?.I think its a problem with the Atrix's soft/firmware.?) I am not exactly sure what all the different settings do, but I am learning. If you have a particular question about my 5ghz settings that could help get yours up and running, I will check what I have and report back an answer..

What security settings are you running? I'm running WPA2

Would like to point out I had to junk my 3300 because it wouldn't work with my Atrix or my N USB dongle attached to the desktop upstairs. That router sucks for the 5Ghz band, even with dd-wrt.

Bought an Asus RT-n56u and it works perfectly even across the street from my house.

I tried going back and forth but it doesn't even see the 5GHz network.

I tried the 20Mhz and 40Mhz both, it didn't see either.

Yea it's an Atrix issue. It should be fixed in the upcoming update.

WPA2 personal + AES

I hope I don't have to buy a new one. I don't have the receipt to return this one.

It is not uncommon for certain hardware to be incompatible with certain other hardware when it comes to networking. The "draft" nature of "N" for so long caused and is still causing many issues.

Have any of you guys tried reflashing your router with stock firmware and trying it out? I don't unfortunately have a router that's capable of DD-WRT or 5 GHz right now (I use a DIR-655 that only has 2.4 GHz, works perfectly fine for my needs).

I had similar problems getting my HTC phone and my daughter's iPod Touch connected to my router, and it took a while to figure it out. I've noticed that some devices do not like connecting to a router using SSID with more than one word or phrase:

router or myrouter = works

my router or this is my router = does NOT work

I had an iPhone 3G which didn't care, and my HP laptop doesn't care about the SSID name. However, both HTC phones we have will not connect if the SSID is more than one word/phrase. I don't have the Atrix yet, but I suspect Android is the reason why SSID is picky?

Something to consider and check...
