Sorry for posting it here, can't post yet on Viper's main thread, (and yes I am a noob)

1. Just wanna ask what is the best Kernel for viper 1.5.2 (I dunno what are their descriptions/effects for each kernels)

2. do you have to make a nand / apps backup first before changing kernel?

Always make a backup. It takes 4 minutes or so and might save your butt:)
I'm using latest faux (find it in the viper hub or in the link at my signature) it's great. But a kernel choice is really a personal thing as no two of us use the phone quite the same.
Nandroid and try. But keep the same kernel for a few days, otherwise you would not get the real taste of it.

First off, you should make a nandroid just in case something goes wrong during installation but if you don't all that you loose is your current rom install. I rarely make nandroids but thats not to say its not recommended, I just enjoy living life on the edge

My favorite kernel for any Sense rom is SebastianFMs Kernel with Axetilens MOD.

Flash your ROM
Flash the Powerful Kernel Reset Tool in Axetilens mod thread
Flash SebastianFMs kernel
Flash the mod - It uses AROMA so you will get to pick and chose all your settings, if you are unsure what to pick most have recommended or default next to the options so you can't go too wrong with them.

He recommends flashing the mod twice just to make sure everything sticks. I always do but I guess thats up to you.

My settings are:

1566mhz on both cores
Performance Gov. (not the dual core option, the third option is what I use)
Underclocked 87mv
300mhz GPU (320mhz could cause stability problems and benchmarks show it doesn't help performance one bit so its a waste of batter)
200mhz 2D (again, anything higher than that is a waste of battery as benchmarks prove that anything higher does no good)
The strictest option for min free settings (I haven't noticed any differnce in load times for the defualt setting and the strict one so its a no brainer to me)
Zram disabled as I have a 512mb hard swap

I have been running this setup for about a week and its still running smooth and fluent. Battery life is incredible to say the least. I'll post some screenshots because quite honestly, you probably wouldn't believe me if I told you in text.

Good luck!

Always make a backup! The kernel is personal preference and nothing more. I have tried all the kernels with viper and didn't have any problems. I don't use viper anymore but when I did, I preferred anthrax, not for any particular reason. Just try each one and see what you like and what works best for you.

I switched from Bricked to Faux and notice an increased performance in gaming, (NFS most wanted ad Wild Blood)
However, I did not wipe dalvik, is that an issue? what will be the effects?

Thanks a ton!

Actually, having the 3D GPU overclocked from 300MHz to 320MHz does increase 3D graphics performance more than you think. Increasing the 2D GPU's clock from 200MHz to 266MHz also increases 2D graphics performance substantially.

I honestly don't know why people feel the need to rebuild the Dalvik cache after installing a new kernel. The kernel isn't installed to the Dalvik cache's partition, so not wiping it when you install a kernel will have no effect at all.

Well according to the benchmark tests done by Anthrax, they don't do very much at all, if anything. I barley notice a difference from 1188 to 1566, it really depends more on the rom.

I'm using Bricked v1.36, I prefer this from all other Kernels....

P.S. I tried all the Kernels, and Found Bricked v1.36 is the BEST for Viper..

Both in terms of Performance as well as Battery Life...:)

I was using Bricked before flashing Faux. Since bricked is just too laggy when I'm running games like Wild Blood and NFS most wanted. However, Faux eats alot of my battery. Is there any way to run games faster on Bricked? I already tried OC'ing my phone while on brick but it still is laggy

The same lag issue on NFS was happened with me..but then I got a solution...I'm on normal settings(no OC)
192-1188
266-228
486
On-demand
Noop
ZRAM

My heavy games are preety smooth now...how I achieved this ?
- Download kernel tuner from Market
- go to Thermald Section
Increase all the frequency to Max or U can Set my settings also...

THRESHOLD LOW
Max freq- 1188

THRESHOLD MEDIUM
Max freq- 810

THRESHOLD HIGH
Max freq- 648

LAUNCH NFS...IT'S SMOOTH NOW...
If it still feels laggy, Increase all the frequencies to your Max Frequency(means if ur Max freq is 1512, then set to 1512, in my case its 1188) :)

P.S. I'm never Using OC, cause I'm battery friendly guy and yes I'm getting a very good Battery life also :)

You can't tell which is the best kernel it depends on your choice and usage but in my opnion i am on faux kernel using ViperS 1.5.2 and its running smooth for now and no problem.
Bricked kernel is also good but gives random reboots...and antrax is totally a mess reboots, reboots and reboots...

Nand backup is not necessary but you should make bcz i got a problem with bricked kernel when i change the Governer from lagfree to Performance my phone reboots ,reboots with in 1 mint and even i cant open my phone....as a result full wipe and flashed rom again...:D

SO its up to u.....
