FIXED! I flashed "stock rooted" and told SuperSU to grant everything. Worked like a charm.

So, Evo LTE on 2.09, stock everything except Philz recovery, S-on, HTC Dev unlocked, not rooted.

I've been trying to get S-off, it appears that rumrunner is the only one that works for this HBOOT version. Unfortunately, I've been getting a message saying I need root or an "unsecure kernel".

I can't get root since when I flash Superuser or SuperSU from Recovery, it doesn't stick. My kernel is stock, but the rumrunner website says that it's OK not to have root if I'm HTC dev unlocked.

I've tested this on Ubuntu 12.04 x32 on two machines, and on Arch x64 on one. Didn't work on any of them.

Is there any way to flash Superuser from fastboot (fastboot flashing does work)? Has anyone else had this issue?

Thanks!

Okay, did that. Woohoo, root! Now I'm getting a different error, though, earlier in the rumrunner process.

It gets to "must sanitize, skunky rum is nasty", prints a line of asterisks, but instead of slowly filling, it just freezes, waits ~10 secs, and then quits, replacing the first few *'s with T's. No error or anything, but S is still on.

Make sure you make sure you follow the instructions to a T.
Also go into supersu and grant permission for everything.
I think the ***** means you are not granting permission.
