@dblackburn965 thanks for the info.

My XT1042 was already partially modified when I got it (from Ebay). It won't register on ATT, but T-Mobile is about 90% (Good 3G, HSPA, and LTE, but calls are hit or miss: in some neighborhoods it cuts out despite good coverage, and in others it's fine.)

I'm wondering if some sort of band unlock was already done. Is there a quick way to check?

I don't have CDMA workshop or any of those programs, so I was going to leave it as is, but if there's something I could flash I'd try it. I have stock XT1045 firware and I'm wondering if I should try flashing it.

If you flash the firmware it will remove the unlock. the xt1042 is only unlocked because of the bands edits.

I just tried flashing a different baseband and I lost all connectivity. So now we know that it was whatever baseband I flashed that allowed the phone to work on AT&T. Now I just have to figure out which one it was.

Wow! Thanks for the warning!

I wish I could reproduce @dblackburn965 's success, but if even you couldn't then I'm giving up. I'll either return it or just use it as is.

EDIT: just saw @dblackburn965's latest post. Let me know if you get this figured out! I hope you didn't flash that because of me  I'd feel really bad.

And thanks so much to all of you for all the help.

Could I trouble you to explain for me - which unlock will I lose? The SIM or the bands? I'm asking because right now I have good TMo LTE but not much GSM/HSPA and calls cut out, pretty much what you described in post #22.

I'd be really happy if I could get TMo calling working well.

What makes the most sense to try. Should I try the NV edit? Flashing firmware? Both?

Flashing the different firmware does not seem to matter much as far as the signal goes. You will lose the sim unlock if you flash a new firmware. The band edits will have to be done again to get the sim unlock back. I suggest trying to edit the NV to unlock different bands. Just remember the bands that are being used now so you can revert any changes if needed. if there is a way to find out which bands the towers in your area are using, that would be a great help.

Appreciate the advice!

Help a newbie out - the link in the Qualcomm unlock thread to the files at d.st never works for me. My browsers (Chrome / Firefox) block the download because they say it's malware. What's a safe way to get the programs needed to edit the NV?

when i get the malware alert in chrome it will sometimes allow you to keep it. Choose that if the option is there. If not then you may be able to go to the downloads in chrome and the file will be there and also a recover option. This will allow you to get the file. If all else fails you can try to get the files using IE or Opera browser.

If all else fails you can try to get the files using IE.
That worked. Finally, a use for IE! :p

So I flashed RETUS 4.4.4 and then wrote the NV. It didn't change much for me.

Here's what happens with me. I get LTE everywhere on Band 4.
If I turn off the LTE, in some areas I get HSPA+ and in these areas I can make calls.
In other areas if I turn off the LTE I get nothing whatsoever. The connection cuts out totally and it says "No Service", and I can't even make calls.
I don't know how to check the GSM/HSPA frequencies in use.

I'm going to experiment with various NV settings to unlock more freqs when I have time.

It does not look hopeful but let us know if you get anything better.

OK I've made some progress on the stock USC firmware I copied a few nv items from the xt1045 an wrote them to the xt1042. An I now picking up some signal I wonder if I write every nv item from the xt1045 to the xt1042 if it will start picking up signal as in emergency call before I could write nv items an it would lose all signal an the radio would be turned off

@afox27 Good luck with all that. I wish ATT wouldn't make Motorola lock the bootloaders on their devices.

My situation ATM is that I added lots GSM/WCDMA bands with the NV tool. I'm getting LTE all over (this is central NJ) on band 4 (1700/2100) but 2G/3G is hit or miss. Phone calls mostly work but sometimes just bork the connection. (Even an incoming call in a bad spot will make the connection go down for a minute or so.)

I'm going to see what happens in other areas when I travel - I'm particularly curious to see what will happen in a place where the only T-Mo LTE is refarmed 1900 - not sure if I'll have any connection at all.

The info on that thread looks to be the same as what we are doing just in a harder way since we have the band calculator app.
I see.

In any case, since LTE seems to work fine for me, right now I'm just using my XT1042 purely over the LTE data connection, with a Simple Mobile SIM, using Google Voice for SMS and VOIP for calls. It's working out pretty well!

(I still have a Ting account with some balance, and now that they're also a TMo MVNO, maybe I'll grab a SIM from them.)

I just wonder why I can't connect to any ATT towers. My Cricket SIM won't work at all.

Well I have a att phone with a T-Mobile Sim on straight talk. I can't roam on ATT at all I but on my other phone. I can roam on ATT I think its the phone itself

I would've thought it's missing a band but it doesn't seem likely - the chip should be able to handle all the necessary frequencies.
Check this out! I ran the IMEI on imeidata.net, and this came up:

I wonder if the reason it won't register on ATT is because of the IMEI? (Maybe something to do with USC's roaming agreements?)
