[Q] Can't fastboot with volume or adb, help!

I am trying to root a Motorola Atrix 4G (AT&T) for a friend, with Android Gingerbread (2.3.6), but I am unable to enter fastboot to access anything. The volume buttons on the side do not work at all, so that option is out. I tried using "adb reboot fastboot" on Windows XP with no luck. The screen stays on the Motorola emblem until the battery is either removed or dies. Is this phone destined to stay stock in its current state?

Um, duh. "The screen stays on the Motorola emblem" is the fastboot mode.
If you tried accessing it via fastboot, you would've seen it actually works.

Shouldn't there be some kind of text at the top of the screen, confirming fastboot mode? The only text on the screen is below the Motorola emblem that says "Dual Core Technology".
