I transferred over my /storage/emulated/0/media folder from my old GNex (CM10.2 M1) to the root of my "SD" card on my Nexus 5 (/sdcard). I rebooted the phone, but the custom ringtones aren't an option when choosing different notification sounds. Here is the folder structure on the N5:

/sdcard/media
/sdcard/media/audio
/sdcard/media/audio/alarms/alarm.mp3
/sdcard/media/audio/notifications/various MP3s here

I've tried moving the files to:

/sdcard/Alarms
/sdcard/Notifications

I then rebooted the phone. The MP3s aren't an option if I choose to browse for them via "Media Storage". I have ES File Explorer installed. I can see the files when I choose ES to browse for the files. Am I not allowed to use MP3s with the built in "Media Storage"?

You need to convert them to ogg format. Note if you want them to loop, you need to add special attribute in header. Check here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21947130&postcount=21 for some more details.

It sounds like the answer to my question is that the built in media "chooser" app cannot see MP3s. Unfortunate. Luckily, I have ES File Explorer that can choose them for me.

I know about the OGG tag. I just don't have any ringtones in OGG format. I know I could do it easily with ffmpeg. Maybe one day when I'm feeling bored. Thanks for the confirmation!
