I have a rooted SGH-I777 and am looking to get CWM Recovery as I cannot use ODIN due to my broken USB port.
However I've heard negative things when installing CWM Recover via Rom Manager. I want to get this so I can make nandroid backups and such.

However I heard many mixed things: Is it okay to get CWM Recovery via Rom Manager on a rooted SGH-i777?

Do not use rom manager on the I777. Please read the sticky posts in the I777forums.

Recovery is not in a separate partition on this phone. It is a part of the kernel. Choose a custom kernel that is compatible with your current system, and use Mobile Odin to flash it. That would be the preferred method, even if your usb port was working normally.
