This is the method that works for me, always. Like, always always. Never failed.
If you have problems getting into Download Mode try this method:

1. Take out your sim card, sd card, battery and open Odin3.
2. Put the battery in.
3. Plug in USB. (the phone will power on to that screen)
4. Hold down both Volume keys, and then push power. Hold it and dont let go.
5. Wait for it to go black.
6. When it goes black the 2nd time release power and keep holding the Vol Down and Vol Up.

I am new at this but i see your steps are in the wrong order....i have done Odin 4x doing it this way

1. Take out your sim card, sd card, battery and open Odin3.
2. Put the battery in.
3. Hold down both Volume keys (JUST VOLUME KEYS)
3. Plug in USB (still holding Volume keys)
4. Keep holding JUST VOLUME KEYS

Thanks for your input. I don't know about the above poster and his methods, but as for me apparently mine is one of the Cap's for which the button combos do not work. *shrug* I got mine from Amazonwireless.com, and they're shipping me a new one, I'll ship mine back. Got it for a cheap price and now getting good service gotta love it.

Just as a side note, After this I am only buying HTC devices. They are so much easier to root and Flash roms. I'm hoping that the G2 has AT&T 3g like the Vibrant so maybe I can just buy one and use it w/ AT&T That phone looks sweet.
