As everyone knows, on stock, all (free) tethering apps are broke and openvpn is a disaster. I switched to Hashcode's CM7 and both work perfectly on the first try. As I understand it, CM7 is the only AOSP-based D3 rom out there. So am I correct in thinking that all the other roms (which are just cleaned up and modded versions of VZW's rom) have Verizon's software installed that breaks all free tethering apps? I'm concerned about VZ's spyware (CarrierIQ) and all their other crap. I've only ever had AOSP phones.

I love CM7 and the fact that it is free from *ALL* of VZ's software, but it currenly has no working support for videocam and a couple other hardware bits. So I'd like to try some of the other roms that are discussed here to see if they are as stable as stock.

So, can anyone tell me if these other roms (Mav, SteelDroid, etc) are free from spyware and artificial limitations imposed by the carrier? Does tethering work WITHOUT the TBH baseband hacking? Does OpenVPN work?
