wow thank you for posting that!! i went to check it out and it looks awesome! i mean ive always been on xda and browsed androidforums but never dl anything androidforums. always trusted xda but im sure they are the same and have different resources ;). so whats this clockwork you speak of lol. i am a noob on android. is that to boost speed or something?
Clockwork Recovery is the thing that allows you to flash custom roms. Theres a post about it in the Android Dev page of the Captivate section. It also allows you to do NAND backups(very important), partition your SD card(s) and so on and so forth.

The Captivate is still in it's early phases, and everyone's mainly waiting on the update to 2.2 and hopefully we want have to wait for another root process.

I'm new to Android as well, but I had a G1 for about a month and learned alot about ADB(LEARN IT!!!) and flashing. Before I had my G1 I had my TP2(T-Mobile version) and really liked it, but I love my Captivate..lol

And all of a sudden my GPS icon is going haywire... Might have to check that out..lol

If you have any more questions, you can either PM me or just post here.. I've been up for 36 hours and I'm thinking I'm fixin to crash..Byt prolly not..lol

thank you for being so helpful! seems ur new to android but u im sure u know more than me. i will look into this ADB u speak of lol. its hard for me to really learn everything at the moment when i dont have my captivate yet! today was the first time i went to an at&t store and played with one. i've been to other and they only had the dummy one or it just wouldnt turn on lol. but really i do appreciate your help and looking forward for everything else! another thing, i read about this barcode scanner on the captivate that can be used to dl certain apps? one of the first things i will get after rooting is beautiful widgets. and ive read on androidforums that it is no longer available on the market and so ppl use this barcode scanner to scan from the website and it gives u the app????

It's not exactly a bar code..It's called a QR code. And all you have to do is take a picture of it, and do something else(Id on't know what) and it installes it...I guess. I've never dealt with them before.

When it comes to ADB it's included in the Android SDK.. Google it and download the sdk as well as Eclipse. Read the thread about Enabling NonMarket Apps..It shows ADB and such. It's easy to use once you get the hang of it. It's all comand line as well so you might wanna swallow your fear if your nervous. I will say tho, these phones are pretty resilient and are damn near un brickable...Might hang a few times, but just do a stock reflash and your good to go.

hmmm very interesting.... im still not use to terminal and command line and all so i have to read up on that to be familiar. i am barely on the beginning of learning to root and all. seems like with each new phone i get i have to learn new programs and all :D.

Sorry if this post bother anyone. Just want to say hello to the Android world in general and Galaxy S world in particular after a long time being with WM. I'm about having the Captivate this afternoon and just now so excited about that (that is why I do this post :D). I will have a lot of time to read this forum, explore the phone and the Android since I'm pretty new with it (at the moment I don't even understand what "root" mean :D), so I won't do anything until the Froyo come out :D

SRE is available in the Captivate Android Development section of these forums. Just make sure you read read read everything first so you don't freak out if you run into problems lol. These phones are hard to brick so flash away. ADW Launcher is another homescreen replacement that has FREE themes you can download and use and its easily found when you search the market. Grab Rom Manager and Titanium Backup as well and you should be ready to go nuts after you root. Some of the downloads in the development section root the phone for you while they also install lag fixes etc. but I'd wait to see how you like the phone before you bother with a lag fix or GPS fix. My GPS is fine but I did use a lag fix because the phone drove me nuts after being used to a tweaked Nexus One for a few months.
Am thinking of ditching my Desire (Nexus one with senses) for the captivate), would you recomend?

ive been reading a lot on here and other websites but mainly focusing on here.... will be getting captivate on thursday and would like to root, sideload, overclock, all that fun stuff!! is there a difference between unleash the beast and super rooter extreme? can i do both? should i do one then the other? seems like these are the 2 tools out there to use when u first get the captivate. so after using one of these tools or both, do then install titanium backup? just wanna see whats the right order to do things. any help is greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure of all the advantages/disadvantages between SRE and UTB, I think I chose SRE as it was just the most convenient at the time. I'm fairly certain you should only apply one or the other. Then after SRE I also applied the one click lag fix that you can install from the market as per the thread titled [APP] One Click Lag Fix APK in the developer forums that I am apparently not able to post a link to yet.

is it true that SRE is only windows based? i have a mac.... if i use parallel's and run win 7 will that work? yea im leaning toward SRE cuz of all its features

No not the latest version, if your rom is stock it's just a matter of renaming as update.zip and booting into recovery, now it overclocks too. Utb is nearly the same but does not include the overclock kernel but does include tethering via wireless. different devs similar results. The lag fix gives thee greatest improvement to the quadrant score, quadrant apparently is finding a deficiency in thee file system or how the hardware handles it. But thee real world difference is less than quadrant makes it seem, basically we get an unnaturally low score without the fix.

Utb is good but sre is easier. The overclock kernel needs a either script or a tool to set the higher speed. The tools like set cpu aren't completely captivate friendly, sre includes the script right off the bat so no tool is needed unless you want to make it slower
