The usb jack on my captivate is torqued so it only charges on usb, it doesn't get recognized by any computer its connected to. Does anyone know if there is a way to flash back to stock without doing it through USB? I'm trying to flash something else on the phone and can't, and everything I've read says go back to stock in order to flash to something else.

The phone currently has GB 2.3.4 with a talon kernel (2.6.35.7-...). The real reason I want to flash back to stock is simply to go to CM9 + ICS or JB. If there is a way to get to CM9 without first going back to stock that would be great, but Google tells me go back to stock.

The error I get when I currently try to flash to a CM9 rom is something like this;
Code:
assert failed: getprop ("ro.product.device") == "captivate" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "captivate" || ...... [ a bunch more or getprop statements....]
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
Anybody know if there is anything I can do with this phone to upgrade the ROM and/or kernel?

You're taking a big risk by doing this. You can't recover if something goes wrong and can't get back in recovery.

That being said, going back to stock means stock gb, which you could flash with the Odin app. As for I can see, your problem atm is that you have a different build prop than what you're trying to flash. That can be changed but it's always safer to go back to stock kk4 before flashing.

I'm gonna have to disagree, because even he is able to flash stock with Mobile Odin, if he flashes one that isn't rooted, he will be stuck because he can't root or use Mobile Odin to flash a kernel. I suggest that you use CWM or Mobile Odin to flash Corn Kernel, at which point you will be able to continue the installation. But if you screw up the boot partition ever, you're going to be stuck if you don't have USB.

Crap so even if I can use mobile Odin to flash back to stock I would lose CWM and never be able to root again I think.... So here is another question, assuming there is a stock rooted rom for the captivate, would flashing to that (via mobile Odin) then allow me to finally flash the rom I want (CM9 + 4.1.1)? Anyone have any idea?

Also it might be worth noting that this phone does not identify itself as a i897 but as a "GT-i9000", this happened way back when I flashed the rom its currently using. That may be why the CM flash isn't working but I'm not sure if its otherwise important.

I bring this up because I'm trying to d/l and use Mobile ODIN for my phone but the i896/897 package installs but I cant use the app. The base mobile Odin lite package says I need a different one, the other 2 I get (I9000 or I896) install but can't be ran : /

Modile Odin doesn't flash bootlaoders (to keep people from bricking) and I believe you have the I9000 bootloaders, which were used back in the GB days due to ROMs being ported from the I9000 cappy.

I'm sorry to say that you're most likely stuck with what you have atm. Without USB, you can't change your bootloaders (that I know of).

I though you could flash Corn kernel with Mobile Odin? If not, then my bad. Otherwise, I don't see why you would disagree :p

korockinout13 was just sayin that even if he flashes to stock using mobile odin, he will loose root and therefore not be able to use mobile odin afterwards (mobile odin requires root).
Maybe i can put together an odin kk4 firmware package with Root injected into the system and even include sgs kernel flasher and a copy of kk4 corn kernel v7.0A also, so that it can be flashed in order to get the cwm recovery. I have built odin packages before with kk4 corn kernel instead of stock kernel, but it won't do a full wipe after the flash, so i reverted back to stock kernel because i wanted it to wipe cache, data and dbdata.
Give me some time and i will see what i can do. May not be today or it may be, but asap.

If u need one now check my user name and see my topics i started. I put together a kh3 firmware package with boogs cwm kernel a while ago. That may work good enough....flash at ur own risk though. Just sayin.

Edit:

Ahhh Damn !! Nevermind !! Can't be done ! Because mobile odin will not flash the .pit file and that means the repartition from mtd to bml won't be possible.
Sorry....but hey, it was the thought that counts !! :D

(ps. I'm still gonna doin some testin with this idea on my captivate...and see what happens...will post back info asap)

Ahhhh right, good point. I shouldn't post before having coffee lol :p

Hmm is it possible to update my rom or kernel if they're similar? Like a newer rev of Talon kernel?
It is, you can flash GB ROMs that are running on I9000 BLs (like Mosaic 9). Although, keep in mind that it's risky. Before anything, I would make a nandroid backup!
