You guys are my last hope!

Got the Galaxy S5 from Straight Talk, after being fed up with a lousy upgrade experience with Virgin Mobile. Although the phone functions great, I have a real issue with ST not rolling out firmware updates like every. single. other. carrier.

First off, is there really no hope of a stable firmware update to Android 5.0?

Second, is it possible to root? Towelroot fails, and I can't find any straight answers anywhere else. Has anybody had any luck rooting?

Hello guys. i am still wondering how i can root my sungsung s5 sm-s902L tracfone. i saw your conversations but saw no help. Please someone message me my number is (323-405-4242) thanks

You need to install TWRP first through odin. then its rooted. I am using android noughat on my sm902L model s5. The rom i use is called Resurrection remix. There are some posts on here about it. Go back through this posts there is download links to the TWRP version you need.

Not exactly. TWRP is just a custom recovery. Although it allows you to easily install non-official firmware, it doesn't give you root access in and of itself.

Root access requires a superuser app and binaries. You'd still need to root your device if you keep a stock ROM on your phone or if you install a custom ROM which doesn't have root baked in.

ROMs like RR do have root baked in these days so it saves you doing that extra step, but root access isn't granted by TWRP.

So in order to gain root access, I need to install a twrp mode?

TWRP is custom recovery. It doesn't grant root access per se. However it can make it easier to get and you'll probably want it anyway.

I'm not familiar with your model, but assuming the bootloader isn't locked, it should be easy to get root and/or install a custom ROM.

Just keep searching and reading about your particular device and always make sure you're flashing the correct firmware or you can brick your phone.

What I did to root my SM-S902L.

1. Install and run Samsung Kies, follow instructions. Do not update phone with Kies. http://www.samsung.com/in/support/usefulsoftware/KIES/ Kies should Install the correct Windows Drivers for the phone

2. Download TWRP. https://twrp.me/devices/samsunggalaxys5qualcomm.html Follow the Odin method instructions.

3. Use Odin to flash TWRP. Odin Download. http://www.droidviews.com/download-odin-tool-for-samsung-galaxy-devices-all-versions/

I used ODIN 3.10 for my phone.

Instructions for ODIN are on that page.

Just unzip the file and Click on the .exe ODIN should run. ODIN DOES NOT need to be installed. If you download a version of Odin that has a installer, DO NOT install. It may contain Malware.

4. After you flash TWRP it will ask to install Super SU. Select yes. Phone should reboot.

$. Now you should be rooted.
Hello I was wondering if the version of the twrp you listed, will work with my Samsung Galaxy s5 sm-s902l tracfone thanks

so I have the s5 straight talk sm-903vl. I've little experience with rooting phones. so the easiest method I've come up with is this. I found kit kat firmware for my s5 on easy firmware.com there is a fee though. If I can get the stock kit kat os on this 6.0.1 phone, then use towel root to one click root. then voila. root access. then getting custom roms should be easy.
if I'm wrong on this. please let me know

I've had no luck rooting this phone. I've tried kingroot, srs root. Kingoroot. Both Android and desktop versions. And I've also tried flashing TWRP via Odin. Multiple different versions of Odin and TWRP with no luck. Any help ?

all i did was flash TWRP then i flashed CyanogenMod 13 right after. no idea why yours isnt taking the custom recovery. maybe try unchecking auto restart in odin and once the TWRP flash finishes hold power + Home + Vol Up without restarting the phone it might be the stock rom overwriting the custom recovery.

just a fair warning if you flash anything other than stock you can never go back to stock, you will be stuck with custom roms for life. so flash wisely

I'm not new to custom ROMs or anything like that I'm just new to this phone. I've had plenty of other android devices I've played around with. And I love custom ROMs and mods and stuff like that. But I will try what you said and let you know what happens. Did you unlock the bootloader before flashing TWRP ?

Alright. What about the s903vl? I believe that's what I have. I doubt there is a big difference between the s902l and s903vl, considering you can use g900v ROMs on the s902l.

Where did you get that idea? You can go back to stock any time you like. It's how most of us update our bootloader/modem or"reset" the phone to recover from major problems before returning to our favorite custom ROM.

not on this phone you can't the only OS they ever released was 4.4.2 and once you flash a rom newer than that you can never go back to stock because the phone blocks downgrades. i myself am stuck on custom roms forever because the phone wont let me flash the stock rom.

    Easy root for SM-S902L

I suppose that would be helpful...

    Model SM-S902L
    Android version 4.4.2 (boo!)
    Kernel version 3.4.0-4647767
    Build number KOT49H.S902LUDUAOD3

    Use CF-Auto-Root
    Just google it

I have Resurection Remix Marshmallow running on my wifes S5 902L. RR 5.8 did not work. I am guessing firmware. i was able to flash Marshmallow version today. Everything works EXCEPT maps for GPS.. This is a big one for us. The Snap Camera also only has HDR or Auto.... I am searching for a solution - hoping Official LineageOS official when it comes out will help. All I know, is I cant stand Samsungs with Odin / Heimdall.... Too used to my Oneplus One or HTC M9. Hopefully someone has a known flash modem working with a stable Marshmallow or Nougat ROM for the SM-902L

KLTEVZ works.... THAT is the version you want on the SM-902L (I have it working but went to Resurrection Remix now). Mine had issues with CM14 / RR 5.8 Nougat recognizing the SIM. I went back to Marshmallow Resurection Remix (based on CM13) and after a clean wipe and install the phone came to life. GPS can tell where I am, but it does not track. Flashed this morning Jan 2, 2017... Still looking for better Camera then Snap (only auto and HDR mode on the S5 SM-902L).

I have the straight talk s902L and use kltevzw unofficial lineage OS 12/30 build and I have no problems at all gps, data, SMS, MMS, WiFi, all works my baseband is AOG2. I used the newest pico gapps package bare minimum

I've been having the exact same problems. Used moar rom for weeks without any issues, then data is gone. Oddly enough, I can connect to 1x data by using the idoneapps Testing/Phone Info > Device Info feature to turn the preferred network type to CDMA Only. It ain't perfect (slower than molasses), but it's something.

For those of you looking to functional roms, I've had luck with moar rom and Phoenix rom.

I also can't change my APNs, and using the "vzwinternet" input didn't work for me either.

I must admit, it's kind of comforting to see that so many people are having the same issues! Crappy, but comforting...

i got my 4g data connection to work, all i had to do was contact straight talk and they some how fixed it from their end, so the issue was with the network and not the phone itself. just hit straight talk up in a chat and ask them to fix your data.

---------- Post added at 09:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:44 PM ----------

I can make calls and get texts, no mms or data.
I think that changing the apn would fix it, just trying to find out how to do it.
    Maybe editing the apns-conf.xml file?

no need to reflash any modem, the modem that comes with moar rom is the correct one, i just want to update you and let you know i got my 4g data to work just by simply calling up straight talk and they somehow fixed it from their end and i never once had to touch any apn settings. my data was working within 5 minutes after talking with straight talk.

@masterx1234 Which firmware version did you odin flash after moar?

ValuSent from my SM-N920P using Tapatalk

i just flashed moar rom, thats it. then i flashed the stock modem.mbn file that was in the 4.4.2 rom for my phone in odin. then after that i flashed xposed module installer through twrp and thats about it.

Just a little update for u guys ive done alot of digging and cant find/or make stock firmware for this device so if you brick and cant get into recovery your screwed.
That being said if you make a full backup with twrp you should be ok to flash roms for the verizon s5 but you would still be taking a moderate risk something could allways go wrong. And youd be ok if you could still get into your recovery and use your backups.

Now with that out of the way i know theres people out there that can unbrick these phones with the right tools and files if anyone with the ability wants the files needed (if i havnt provided the right ones all ready) please pm me and ill give any stock files u need.

That goes for anyone else 2 i have twrp backups of system, modem, ect. If you need files to restore your phone. I also have the PIT file

Ill keep tinkering because its fun and ill post any success or failures here in the future:)
    I Need the Files please
