in the process of unlocking and rooting my wife's phone, I forgot to backup her pictures. Anyway to recover them? I have tried a number of recovery programs (e.g. Recuva), but they don't recognize the nexus 6 sd card. Needless to say I am in the dog house and could really use some help if it is even possible at all to recover the pics.

Thx in advance

Sincerely,
Dead man

As hinted at above, you cannot use PC recovery software. You must use software that installs directly on the phone. I haven't any experience with any of them. Disk Digger I believe is one such tool and people claim to have managed to get it to work.

This Recovery tool from Easeus works good: http://download.easeus.com/free/emsa_free.exe
With the free version you can restore files one by one but its better than nothing. :)

Gotta ask, but she wasnt using google photo's auto backup option and didnt know it was she? Have her go to https://photos.google.com/ and log into her google account. Maybe, just maybe....:fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:

sadly no...no photo auto backup. **** Digger and EaseUS were both able to recover the pics she deleted on her own, but not the ones wiped during the unlocking process.

I think I'm SOL.... Thanks for the suggestions.
