The last update was in August, I think, and it was still rootable. Might be impossible with the latest update, but I wouldn't know, couldn't get the damn thing to re-attempt the install.
Same.

I did delete a bunch of system apps after rooting, but luckily the failed install just reverted to the last update, and it still functions fine.

I don't know where to get that. The ASUS support site still doesn't have it, and I can't find the downloaded file on my tablet.

Never mind, I found it. Has to be downloaded from here: http://www.asus.com/Tablets/ASUS_MeMO_Pad_7_ME176C/HelpDesk_Download/
Better here:
http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=ASUS+MeMO+Pad+7+(ME176C)&p=28&s=6

At your link (another site of Asus) the WW version is not yet available for download (I assume you have WW version).

For the installation, the ".....-user.zip" is found in the file you will download (you have to unzip the downloaded file).

The one I provided is newer, and it's the very first one. You linked to the WW_V3.1.23.161 , which is from August 8.

Anyway, I got it installed and updated, but lost root. RootZenFone isn't working this time. I guess we'll just have to wait for an update on that.

WARNING: If you update to the latest build, do NOT attempt to root with RootZenFone. It will fail and leave your tablet in live demo mode, meaning that every time your screen dims, the demo starts playing again, and certain options are disabled like system restore. You can't turn off WiFi, set screen on to anything but 30 seconds, and so on, because it automatically reverts. You can't even turn off the screen! You just have to deal with the stupid demo when you're not using it or shut it down.

In my link there are 8 firmware, and one of 8 is latest (182) also for international version (WW).

In your link there are 5 firmware and the 182 is onky for chinese version (CN).

To stop demo caused by RootZenfon you have to make the things you can read on RootZenfone blog (but with factory reset)

There's 8 there now. It was 5 before. Mine had 8, with the newest on top. You got the two mixed up.

And there's no way to do factory reset once it's in demo mode. It's disabled.

Never mind, I read the comments on the post for ROOT ZenFone 1.4.6r and someone posted instructions on how to reset.
Hold the back button for 10 seconds and enter passcode 741603. This will perform a factory reset.

I must be doing something wrong

YES! Success! Root access verified by JoeyKim's Root Checker (available on Play Store).

Okay, Cavalera (and others), here's what I did. Through the browser on my laptop, I grabbed the RootZenFone -1.4.2r.apk from the DevHost link in nafayi's post earlier (Thanks mate! :good:):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55215949&postcount=18
I then pushed the *.apk to the tablet's internal storage, disconnected it from my laptop, installed through the inbuilt Package Installer, then ran the app. A 'Disclaimer' came up, tap OK. Following its instructions of forgetting the wi-fi network I had it connecting to, then shutting off the wi-fi, I read the rest of the stuff on screen about shutting the tablet down five seconds after tapping the 'Get Root' button. Tapped that, then a screen came up saying I'd activated a Demo in offline mode. I counted to five, then shut the tablet down. I then counted 30 seconds after the screen shut off - just in case the app was going to auto-restart or something like that - then turned it back on. It booted up without a drama, next I re-connected to wi-fi, straight to Play Store for the Root Checker app. Ran it, and the beautiful little white square with the SuperSu symbol was there telling me JoeyKim wanted Superuser access! I'm like, YEEEEESSSSS!!!!!
So, now we have root, I can protect my daughter from the bloatware that infects this awesome device and get it to run a lot smoother without the intrusions from 'ChatOn', and other junk apps.
A huge shout-out to shakalaca (creator of the RootZenPhone app) wherever he/she may be.

OKAY, WHAT'S NEXT?!?!?

Go to Play Store and install Jumobile's System App Remover (ROOT). After allowing the app Superuser access, the app will list every system app that's installed. Based on the stock OEM firmware update ASUS pushed out a couple of weeks ago, check the boxes to the right of the following...
Facebook, Flipboard, Amazon Kindle, Block list, Cloud storage, com asus youtubesearch, Do It Later, emusic, Graffiti Board, MyFrame, MyWater, Omelet Chat, Party Link, Search (with a 'G' in a blue square), Story, Supernote, Webstorage, What's Next, Zinio, Cloud Print, Google Drive, Google Play Books, Google Play Movies, Google Play Music, Google Play Newsstand, Google Search, Hangouts, Picasa Uploader and TalkBack.
Overall, that's 30 apps with a total of 185.23MB.
After the uninstall goes through, tap on the Recycle bin icon up the top-right of screen, wait a few seconds for an advert, check the box down the bottom-right of screen to select all and tap the red 'Delete' button. Lastly, after you've closed out of the System App Remover, uninstall it, then go to Play Store/My apps and remove all those apps you've just uninstalled from your apps list, to completely prevent them coming back.

Hope that info helps someone...
I have done this probably 10 times and I can't get it to work. I always end up in the Demo loop. I think it is my timing after pressing the button. Any ideas?

What update are you on? Typically this happens on the newest version (.182) as the newest one is unrootable so far.
