Currently it's the ONLY way.
It's the only DESCRIBED way. There're plenty of known security problems in this Android version which should make it a breeze to get in; unfortunately example exploits only exist for ARM so someone capable would need to take the finger out of the butt and adapt it to x86. Simply having a working ROP chain would already go a long way to a generic exploit; maybe RootZenFone contains a usable payload...

I looked around the Zenfone 2 area and wasn't sure if I found the thread you mentioned. Is it this one? [Guide] Un-brick both (Soft/Hard) bricked Zenfone 2 ze550ml/ze551ml.

Can you provide detailed instructions for the process you followed? If the work's already been done and was successful, it would be very helpful for everyone here.
I think that is the right thread. I'm sorry, but I can't really provide a guide now - it's been a while now since I did it and I can't recall exactly what I did (and even then it was by trial and error in desperation to fix the brick). If I have time over the weekend I will go back and look over the relevant files and stuff and see if I can remember. Sorry can't be more helpful.

You get an A+ in my book for being willing to try! Many thanks!

Fruitless, I'm afraid. I had a look but couldn't really work out what I did before without trying it again. Don't really want to risk that, having almost bricked it once already.

Google Translate couldn't make much sense of that, but the key thing I could glean from it was that this method is NOT for the LTE model.

Yes, what will happen to me? :)
This new method works for LTE and Wi-Fi only models.
It is very safe and not brick your device. And this is very well!

Anything you need connect your tablet in Droidboot mode to the PC and run L-to-KK-Escape.cmd

Well you were gone for so long, and right when many people were bricking their tablets and needing help, that I assumed the worst. It seems the main reason tablets were bricking or rooting was unsuccessful was because the previous method required the user be on Windows 7 for it to work. Can you use Windows 8 or Windows 10 to reliably root the tablet with your new method?

I've run your linked instructions through Google Translate and came up with this:

Before you begin, make sure that all the actions you have installed ADB driver for tablet ASUS_Android_USB_drivers_for_Windows.rar | how to install

  1. We need to take the firmware file which you want to set (KitKat or Lolipop) renamed MOFD_SDUPDATE.zip (after renaming the file to watch the properties - in the file extension is not should be double .zip.zip) and copy it to the root of MicroSD card.
  2. Download and unzip Downgrade.rar .
  3. Connect the tablet to a PC in DROIDBOOT mode. ( How to log in droidbut )
  4. In the folder with the unpacked archive of claim 2, run the file L-to-KK-Escape.cmd After he fulfills (do not touch anything and wait until you close the command window itself!) Tablet is loaded in KitKat DROIDBOOT mode.
  5. This item is only for the model without LTE! And only if the betting official firmware! Download and unzip the Restore-of Recovery-31C.rar , run the file the Restore-of Recovery-31C.cmd , waiting for completion of the (restore native rekaveri, or firmware will sink).
  6. Then, the volume keys on the tablet select SD Download and confirm the power button. This will start the process of firmware.
  7. If the Command window is stuck in the inscription " <waiting for device> " and nothing else happens, make sure that the tablet is plugged in and is defined in the Device Manager as the the Asus All Android Bootloader the Interface . Reinstall the ADB drivers.

The author assumes no responsibility for any risks associated with the use of these files. The PS From this point on only recommend using this instruction, the old used only for raising the "brick"!

I have a little problem. My screen won't go to sleep automatically after 30 seconds. It used to. But ever since yesterday it hasn't. I have to push the power button to make the screen go off.

Edit - Nevermind, it's working again. I ran ccleaner. And that fixed it.

I get the sense that this device will never be unlocked (either though ASUS offering an unlock tool or someone out there with the skill sets to unlock this device). It's a real shame given the hardware specs.

Does anyone know if it's possible to chainload a custom ROM somehow or perhaps work with the open source firmware currently available (currently version 12.14.2.26)?
