I found an FUU for 4.4 Kitkat on the link you posted earlier, It does all the necessary actions with no failures and completes with a Congrats screen but the firmware is the same?

I think those are sense 5.5 firmware. Look for a thread in developer section by miniwhooper, where she posts the sense 6 firmware which will upgrade you to hboot 2.22 and radio 1.28. Flashing this will upgrade you to the new partition layout, though, so you should probably put a sense 6 rom on your sdcard so you can flash it after you upgrade firmware.

Before I did anything further, if i were you, i would make TWRP backup and backup all files on the sdcard. I'd also want to feel confident that adb and fastboot work well enough to reboot the device and push large files to the sdcard (adb push...).

Do you know a way I can get the downloaded OTA firmware file off my phone e.g. where it is stored?

look and see if there is a folder called fuma on your sdcard. OTApkg.zip should be in there, but I don't think you can just flash that like you would flash a rom. from what i've read, it won't work.

Yeah I know, I think that you can flash it from FUU from what i have read
