It says right in the manual not to take it into a swimming pool, the sea or near sand (the beach). It doesn't matter why you bought it. They specifically say not to do that with it in the manual. It's not Sony's fault that you didn't read it. :)
As for the indicators, some say bleach will turn them white again, but I'm sure the repair centre will be able to tell that you did that. ;)

check the back glass in the top left corner near the camera and see if it is raised. it seems like the glue is wearing down for a lot of people and compromising the water resistance.

Dear All,

Let me give you all the info you need.

1. In time Xperia Z starts to loose water resistance. I don't know whether this is caused by the flips or other parts of the phone.
But my Xperia Z got water in it in a half filled water glass.

2. Power button is the only part that gets broken. Sony Engineers has done a great job apart from the power button.
It acts like pushed constantly. Therefore it is almost impossible to use when the phone is on.
Also when the phone is off after connecting phone to usb charger red led turns on and phone vibrates 3 times. (boot load thing)

3. Teleservice claims that this is user fault but my phone is dead and I am sure that when all the flips are closed phone still gots water in it.
I have been using this phone for 4 months but it has already lost it's water resistance abilities.

Be aware! Xperia Z is not water proof at all. It loses this functionality so fast.

Hi Everyone.

I have been googleing around and looking at this forum i had to share my experiences with the phone.

I had a white xperia z, bought it in june and lost it to condensation in july. I swam with it in salt water for at least 10 times, and everything was cool, but the last time i did it stood in the sun for about one hour, got really hot and then i swam with it in really cold water. That caused condensation, and condensation is my guess for the problem that the thread maker had.

Since then i had bought a new one, and didnt dip that one in water once. I sent my old xperia to service and they told me that it was dead. After a new battery and some alcohol cleaning i brought it back to life and it works like a charm. I have to say that the sony engeneers did a good job on the elecrtical components isulation. It was in a pile of water and survived. The 'waterproof' shell on the other hand is a laugh. Problems with it and critical areas:
-The back microphone is covered by a veeery thin layer of rubber, and thats all that keeps the water out. It works till some depth is reached, but that think is surely the first thing to leak water.
-The speaker and mic covers are pretty good isulated, they wont leak until you reach more than a few meters of depth.
-The power and volume buttons have also a rubber isulation between the button and the actual electric component. I think its the same material as the one on the back mic cover and with pressure it would surely leak.
-The speaker is a mystery to me. I have no idea how it works since it has something like a speaker chamber inside the phone, and i dont get it if that chamber gets flooded or not. No idea. The only thing that stands is that the speaker goes bust after a few dives. The volume is lower and the quallity goes to hell.
-And for the last, the flaps. My expirience with them was pretty good, but what you HAVE to do is to clean them here and then with alcohol. the rubber and the plastic, both sides, then they seal perfectly. When there is any dirt or oil on them they wont do ****.

All in all, the phone is called waterproof but even if you would seal all the places i have described above with glue it would still leak somewhere sometime.
The phone is described as water-resistant, so you can swim with it up to 30mins to the depth of one meter, but in real life its a question of luck, and how long you have it. After some times the epoxy and the rubber seals wear off ...

All in all, the ZR is a better choice i think. The prone is not water proof but water resistant, and who needs that ...

Totally Agree !!!!! Even if used for a long time (thus getting hot) and just dip the XZ in bowl of water for a minimal number of seconds , It can undergo condensation. I will never put my XZ in water , tho an accident or something like that would touch the XZ if the case arises. Its a damn piece of electrical equipment and Water is not a good friend !!!!

Sony Z is NOT waterproof..
And yes,Sony know it..
For that reason they say not put in sea or pool..
If the phone takes water and the papers is white is not my fault.
Is Sony fault.
The mobile is NOT waterproof!!!
I has it for 20 days and Sony told me that i have to pay 388 euro to fix it.
420 euro have the new..
Never again Sony, was my first time only cause it was waterproof.
I always have htc.Very good phones but idiot service,in Greece.
And on my s4 fall drink and the phone is ok..
This is waterproof :p
Sorry for my bad English..

So, you've placed the phone in at least 2 situations that the manual tells you specifically not to and it's somehow Sony's fault that it's now broken?

No, that's your fault. Also, as the water ingress indicators are now red, it's a 99% certainty that your warranty is void.

It is kind of false advertising.
Sony advertise it as waterproof in there media adds.
When in actual fact it's only water resistant to a small amount of rain for example.
By reading the manual you guys would have realised this and not exposed your devise to the conditions you have.
I'm not blaming you guys because Sony should have made the situation clearer

I think some of you are confused with the terms waterproof and water resistant. Sony never advertised the Z as waterproof, only resistant. They never had an ad marketing to take the phone into deep waters. Only advertised dust proof and water resistant.

The ZR/Z1 on the other hand, they're advertising as waterproof.

Just bought it a week ago and wanted to test it underwater capabilities. With all lids closed tightly, seems like my phone still acts like a ballast tank rather than a submarine...

Edit: I wasn't clear enough on this: I tested the phone under 10cm deep, calm, cold water (in a small bucket) for 15 seconds. Results are: http://imgur.com/a/p5c3q#5

I'm thinking that it's taking water from the second microphone hole which is on the back of the phone, then it gets vaporized (very slowly, takes about 2-3 hours) by the heat. Water vapor can be seen condensing on the internal side of the back camera's glass cover...

I contacted with Sony Turkey and they informed me that the getting water inside the phone is actually a "customer error" and it also breaks the warranty. Great Quality Assurance and Great Customer Care. Way to go Sony...

Even though I assume that there was water in the phone, it kept working and still going on. Atleast Sony engineers do their job good.

Good thing that I also contacted the importer of the phone and he promised me atleast a replacement or a full refund.

Are there anybody else got a faulty phone too or am I the unluckiest XZ owner on Earth?
i've had my phone for 6 months now and working fine until yesterday, SIm card starts acting weird, can't detect it, had to restore entire phone in order to work again, and this morning i found WATER VAPOR ON MY XPERIA Z CAMERA, WHAT THE **bleep** IMG_20130905_121223.jpg

But on the Norwegian Sony website they DO advertise this phone as waterproof. Even a picture where they put it in water. They even have a whole lot of information about how waterproof it is. So if this does not qualify as a manufacturing error, I don't know what does.

There's an app for that

Hi guys,

I saw this thread about testing if a phone is waterproofed without submerging it in the water.

Check out this app that we just lunched. It's still under development and new features will be available soon.
Search for com.technoloid.barometer or Waterproof (the icon with phone in hand) in Google Play

Kind regards,
