Optimization on every start up here as well. Everything else is smooth. Weird..I'm not going to factory reset tho so I guess I'll see if it works out itself.

Att unlocked version.

i think this is both hardware and software issue together
i see my battery is bulging slowly.

Updated to android M still same issue, but this time w/o optimising apps issue.
Still reboots.

No random restarts but the ~25 minute optimizing apps at each restart. Done two factory resets, cleared cache and most of the other recommended steps I've seen here and elsewhere. Motorola support escalated to the "level IV team" and mentioned a $100 out of warranty replacement option. A day later they closed the incident, said that as it was a startup issue it wasn't a priority and they retracted the offer of an out of warranty replacement.

Waiting 25 minutes (or 15 with only stock apps installed) for a phone to start seems like a pretty big problem and maybe a liability issue--imagine needing your phone in an emergency!

the first reboot after my initial update had me optimizing apps.. but ive done a few reboots since that as a test and theyve been ok. im guessing it was a one off issue

The optimising apps when turning on the phone while charging is a bug that has been there all along with the recent LPA.23-15 build of 5.1. I participated in the test drive for the Android 5+ versions and even though Motorola was aware of this problem, they released it anyway. You can reboot while charging, you just can't turn on the phone while plugged in without re optimising apps.

I did the factory reset + cache wipe after it, restored the phone from Google backup (installing the apps from scratch)
The reboots are still here. I think they are related to some bluetooth issue.
I have Pebble watch and headset connected to the phone. When receiving calls, occasionally (maybe once in 2-3 days) the phone hangs then reboots.
If no headset is connected (only Pebble) - no issues.

My xt1060 unlocked dev edition has the same problem before. I tried install the dedoxed 5.1 stock zip of xt1053 and it seemed fine now.
Refer to the thread for download.

Same reboot problem with optimizing apps. Tried clearing cache and factory reset without any resolution. Phone randomly reboots in my pocket and gets really hot. This is a safety issue for that reason (and for the fact that in an emergency, your phone may not be usable for up to 20 minutes). I will not recommend this phone to others and will probably have to get a new phone after only 15 months. Not happy.

Just had this start happening on mine, as well, sort of.

It was working fine today - hadn't installed any new apps in a few reboots, or updated any, either.

With mine, the phone eventually boots up, but the screen won't unlock. Almost like SystemUI completely crashed/corrupted. I know the phone is on cause it reconnects to my Moto 360 and starts sending notifications - new emails, etc. I get the Active Display clock, but nothing else will show onscreen. Boot Animation runs beautifully, though, so it's not the hardware, either. Gotta be something software related. REALLY annoying.

Same here.

Was listening music using a DAC connected to the Moto X 2013 (Lollipop 5.1 Brazil), battery was drained quite fast. Anyway when I was charging the phone I tried to power-up and Optimizing App showed. Took like 10 min to complete. The phone was connected to the USB charger.

My brother has the same issue with his moto x unlocked, running lollipop stock.
Motorola really messed it up this time.
And to think I wanted to buy the new moto x pure.

Try to plug the cable off before turning on the phone. Looks like a serious bug but that helped in my case.
This may be an important piece of info... I had kinda noticed but don't have clear memory for whether it was consistent BUT this seems to only happen to me if my phone is plugged in when it is trying to boot. Unfortunately this is a typical situation if my phone happens to run fully out of battery and power off. Of course could also be that the cache gets corrupted when the phone runs dry BUT similar observation the Optimizing process failed on me a couple times this past week leading to starting over from scratch... when I unplugged the phone it actually succeeded the process so being plugged in seems to be an issue.

Not just Moto X evidently

Same trouble, first occurrence. US Cellular LG G4 though. Optimizing. Ran battery out prior to this happening. Not aware of any update prior. Did finally start up phone, while still plugged in and not fully charged, when this issue arose. Have 2 MotoX phones in house that also run out of battery occasionally & not any such trouble there. Will follow up.

phone overheating?

When my phone randomly crashes it will only get through the "optimizing apps" startup if the phone is first on ice. The phone isn't even warm to touch when it crashes...
