Slight correction: the higher the minimum speed guarantee. A class number defines the absolute minimum write speed of an SD card. Devices can read the class from the card and with that can set some expectations in the software for how long things should take.

So with that, there are Class 2 cards that actually, out of the box, perform better than cards with a much higher class. Will they forever, once worn and fragmented? Maybe not.

It's all very vague, exactly what the manufacturers want :p
Solid state does not degrade in performance with fragmentation. Also the act of defragmenting on solid state causes wear so I do not recommend it. People with cameras notice speed more than anyone. Also the class rating is for a continuous write and does not reflect typical usage performance. There may be miro SD reviews out there that show who is king at the moment that would be worth looking at.

Ah, but they do. If I had a minute I'd dig up some sources (posting from my mobile), but search sdcard.org for fragmentation. There's stuff in their whitepapers on it.
Perhaps it is SSD then. I guess the point is that the rules differ based on the storage type. I have always found that removable storage is pretty slow. I think it is compact flash supports the fastest transfer speeds out of all of them.

does anyone find this to be fishy? It's so cheap for a class 4 32GB

http://cgi.ebay.com/32G-32GB-Micro-...ltDomain_0&hash=item2a1201d9f0#ht_1828wt_1139

It looks pretty legit but I haven't decided whether it's worth the risk.

I'm looking for a 32GB and I'm okay with class 4.
all that money you're saving is going to the tm's after everything in the header. i wouldn't even bother with that if i were you. is it really worth the gamble trying to save a buck?

What does wear SD cards?
usage. flash memory is rated for write cycles/data written to them. same with ssd's or any type of flash memory. it's all finite. it's all just a matter or making it reliable and last longer than an extreme example of usage. it's pretty hard to wear out an sd card in a phone unless you do nightlies all the time and then some. it's also a good idea to buy more memory than you think you need if you do a lot of writing, because the overhead will help extend the life of your card.

Did you try putting 32GB of data on it? I thought the issue with the fake cards is that they tell the OS they have more memory than they actually do.
It took me a few hours but I did manage to put 32GB on them.

I bought 8 of them: my brother took 2, I kept 2 and I got two for a friend. I'll probably sell the other two here somewhere.

USB 2 reads about~ 40Mb/s max in my experience. I have a USB 3 external hard drive, and usb 2 gets around 38 read while usb3 gets about 78. That usb3 might be hard drive limitation at 5400rpm. Most cards will never write over 14... one day... one day.

Sent from my Motorola Atrix 4G on the network with the most backhaul, whatever that is. This post might have errors as I hate touchscreen keyboards.

I ran a test on one of the cards , placing it inside my phone, using SD tools (from the market)
It reported write speeds of 4.0 MB/s and read speeds of 5.3MB/s. In theory that's about a class 6 but there are supposedly latency issues that creep up as the cards get larger.
Your card is a class 4. Just return it?

I took a chance and bought some Chinese 32GB cards supposedly rated for Class 10.

I ran a test on one of the cards , placing it inside my phone, using SD tools (from the market)
It reported write speeds of 4.0 MB/s and read speeds of 5.3MB/s. In theory that's about a class 6 but there are supposedly latency issues that creep up as the cards get larger.

I need to compare that number to known cards before I say anything about the source. I'd be curious to see test results from this app on other atrix's with other microSD cards.

I do notice that it is faster loading everything than my SanDisk 16GB class 2 card. My camera works faster too: faster to load the pictures and faster to take them.
on my old n900 there was a command i could use in the command prompt to bench microSD cards.

my old sandisk 16gb class 2 averaged 3mb/s, min of 2.4mb/s, max of 7mb/s.

currently im using a 16gb kingmax class 10 card. average 16mb/s, min 12mb/s, max of 22mb/s. pretty good considering i bought it off ebay, and unlike my old sandisk, this one actually can hold 16gb without crashing. currently running this card in my atrix. its quite zippy.

I triend to balance cost with size and speed. Got myself a Transcend 16 GB Class 6... SD Tools reports 15.0 MB/s write speeds - good enough for me!
