[Q] Modems and bad signal strength

Hi,
I have some problems with modems and signal strength... I have search other threads but did not find anything really useful.
I bought an i777 when I was living in America for work, but now I'm back to Italy and I see that I always have bad signal (I've checked also with Better Battery Stats). I've tried different modems, but didn't see remarkable differences...

When other people asked for this stuff, the answer was almost always "install and try". Do you know if there is another way to test modems?
Since the i777 is from an American carrier, is it possible to port an i9100 modem?

Thank you!

Short answer is no, i9100 modems will not work on an i777. While the devices are alike in many ways, modems from the i9100 aren't compatible (or portable) to the US variant. You can flash an i9100 modem and the phone will boot up fine, but you'll run into trouble with not being able to hear the caller/them hearing you. Normally this workaround would be to flash an i777 kernel with MicSwap capabilities, but that will have no affect on a modem as the baseband's are different.

Perhaps a longer answer than you needed. Sorry, I'm not aware of a real solution for you other than purchasing a different device for your region.

Thank you for the answer SteveMurhpy! I can't change phone right now, so I'll have to try the other modems... do you know if there is a faster/better method to test them than to install and try? And how much does the version of the OS interact with the modem? I am on Slimsaber right now... Thanks!

I don't think the OS has anything to do with the signal strength, if it did it would likely be on older firmware such as GB, ICS and not the KK version you're currently running. As for the modem, unfortunately there's no way to test signal strength prior to flashing, so you're just going to have to keep trying them until you find one that works in your country.

One might suggest alternate APN settings, but that has more to do with functionality and speed rather than signal strength.

Sorry, as far as I'm aware there's no easy fix for you.

I had some doubts about the compatibility between modem and OS because when I was back on SlimBean and I flashed a modem from GB the System UI kept crashing... but maybe there other types of problems, I didn't investigate that much.

Ok then, I'll keep trying... maybe I'll find the right modem for my country!
Thank you very much again SteveMurphy!
