If u have those files on your SD card u can back them up to your computer before u unlock the boot loader. Now if they're just saved on your email they won't go anywhere. Once u re log into your email account they will still be there. So before u proceed back up everything on your SD card to your computer including pictures if u have pic u don't want to be deleted.

a simple way is to download this program called root unlock, you can download from this page http://www.unlockroot.com/, install it on your pc, it is easy to use ... so the phone can be easily rooted.
i give it a try...
- so i will root the device
- make a backup with TB
- Copy whole SD card to my PC
- unlock bootloader
- Flash ICS Rom ( dont know which one is good )
- Restore SD Card
- Restore Settings and apps with TB

is this a good plan?

After you unlock boot loader flash a custom recovery, clockworkmod.

As for roms, I've been on cm9 and am very happy with it. Stable smooth and great battery life.
