I have never tried to root a phone and don't know if I ever will (scared to brick it), but I think I'll order the HTC One 64GB Dev model. Why? Well, I am still mid-contract with ATT on my SG3, so for the same price (or perhaps a bit less) I can have an unlocked SIM and not have unnecessary ATT programs and logo on the phone. I hope I am correct in assuming that:

1) I can "plug and play" my current ATT SIM card into the HTC One and it will work just fine.
2) If HTC releases updates, I will be able to get them faster than those who are on ATT branded phones.

Are there any concerns I should have? Thank you!

Only concerns are warranty. Its probably easier to get a replacement through ATT if something is wrong. But since you have another device to use while its sent back to HTC, then this maybe a very minor concern. I am getting square trade or similar warranty on my dev edition when it arrives. I think someone said with facebook coupon it was like $90 with a $99 deductible. Much better than ATT (asurion) insurance which as $199 deductible.

Ah thanks. I will look into the warranty concept. I probably won't have a backup phone cuz I'd likely sell the SG3 to help fund the new One.

Alas, for the folks who have been waiting to pull the trigger (like myself), the moment has passed. When I looked this morning, both the 32 GB and 64 GB (Dev Edition) unlocked versions are Out of Stock on HTC's website.
