News just got out today it was released for the Lumia 710,800, and 900(?) .

I remember Nokia announcing they added extra features to their updates (and this is through Navifirm which I guess is Nokia's exclusive update tool).

Anyway my point is, is it possible to extract a CAB out of the Nokia updates somehow and flash it to our devices, or is this not a generic CAB and instead manufacturer heavily tweaked so my question is retarded?

Lol

Thanks!

Aside from firmware updates, the previous cabs when using cab sender do seem to be generic for WP devices (I did a DIY post on updating to tango before and those cabs were from another listing for all WP phones). We would need to find out the addresses for the 7.8 cabs but is there something different with the 7.8 update process? I thought I read somewhere it's a bit different..

ya, i think we would have to wait until the non-Nokia devices receive the 7.8 upgrade since the Nokia cabs are bundled with nokia updates as well...so this is disappointing...

also from what I heard, our devices will never receive the update officially through the Zune program update process or receive notifications for an update...i.e. we will have to force the generic cab update like some of us did for Tango

this device has officially reached its end I guess...time to move on?

I think if you've got a Dell factory unlocked DVP, you might have a chance for Zune 7.8 update as those phones have always gotten WP update notifications and updates through Zune, all the way up to Tango. But if you've got a TMO or ATT DVP (doesn't matter if you unlock), yeah, cab sender is the only way starting from 7740 (up to 7.8 now probably). We can blame TMO and ATT for that. :crying:

If someone ever captured the 00EU/00US bundles, we could likely turn all 31(att)/33(tmo) vps into unbranded ones.

But there's only ever 1 guy for every million or 2 updaters that bothers to capture urls, and we likely dont have enough people to bother capturing the urls

I have an unbranded DVP, if you tell me how to capture URL, I will as soon as I get an update. Im on 8773.98 now, officially update through zune.

+1 for capturing URLs. If I get an unbranded DVP in hand again, I'll do.

As for converting to unbranded DVPs, doesn't zune update check IMEI for updates though? That's how they're limiting the lumia 7.8 updates right now to preproduction/dev devices?

ya, i actually kept my replacement device and never sent my unbranded one back! LOL so I could capture URL's on my other one when it gets out too...sucks because my replacement is the TMO-unlocked one. =(

Hi trobin7,

Microsoft has officially not provided the release date. It is rumored to be early 2013.

Once Microsoft launches the release date Dell will let everyone know if Windows 7.8 update will be available for venue pro.

Please get back to us for further information.

Thanks and Regards,
Nikhil M

but it would be great to have such a "early solution" like for 7.5

some devs working on a custom 7.8 right now but it is still in an very early development stage - they still trying to find an unbrick and update solution with and without j-tag devices

To anyone willing to capture urls: you require a device that is already on the unbranded configuration (ie a 00US/00EU device, which is unbranded), and the device has to have a firmware bundle update available. (ie the device specific drivers)

The easiest way is to restore to a pre-mango update and reupdate and grab the urls. Otherwise we will simply have to hope that dell releases an update for WP7.8.

We dont know if 7.8 requires a new bundle to work, or if the mango ones will simply work (tango didnt require any new firmware bundles, you can install tango on a device that already had mango without dell releasing anything)

Just as much, i need someone very brave to attempt to flash either the at&t one on a tmo device, or the reverse.
I only assume it will work, I definitely cannot say with certianty that it will even work, or even that it wont brick the device
I would recommend someone that already has used the tmo ffu before to attempt to flash the att firmware bundle on top of a tmo device and see what happens.
You should hypothetically be able to unbrick/restore to tmo afterwards.

If it does, we can simply move devices into being unbranded as if any VP were to get 7.8, it would be the unbranded ones first.

Well as far as my knowledge goes all mobiles currently having Windows 7.X will be upgraded to the latest 7.8 as and when it is launched to general public. Possibly this will be the final update in the 7.X series though there are talks that they might bring 7.9 to Nokia phones as discussed in some Nokia blog earlier (as far as my memory can recall - I may be completely wrong too).

The 7.8 update will be delivered to all mobile phones and will bypass operators so it will be directly delivered once authorized. Hence, its my understanding that currently there is no need to try any hacks and patiently wait because as per my information and understanding based on statements by Microsoft - everyone will be getting the 7.8 update and operators will not be able to block the updates as it will be directly delivered by Microsoft to the handset

I kinda disagree. Microsoft can't really bypass operators when delivering updates, and I feel the operators will still be controlling when/how their devices will receive the updates. In short, we will have to flash the CABs ourself if we really want it right away once 7.8 is released to the general public. Then again, unbranded and completely unlocked DVPs will receive it no doubt, but those of us with Tmobile or At&t unlocked phones I believe won't.

Right on. And if TMO/ATT magically does release the 7.8 update, it'll have a hack of a time having to release all the updates before 7.8, like 7740, 8107, 8112, 8773 Tango.... it's just easier for them to ignore an ancient device like the DVP. :crying:

I may be wrong but as far as Microsoft blog / forum posts go all users running Windows 7.X will get updated to Windows 7.8 bypassing all mobile operators. Mobile operators will have no say in this release of Microsoft and this has been discussed on various microsoft forum posts time and again that everyone will be getting the 7.8 update once its released bypassing all mobile operators and will be delivered directly by Microsoft to the mobile holder rather than via the operator. Anyone can do a quick search on bing / google Windows 7.8 Update bypass carrier

Trust me, yo. I really want to believe 7.8 will bypass the carriers, but there's just too much conflicting info out there in bing land and google town. I guess we'll find out soon enough (or not soon enough)! Let's hope that even if some DVPs don't get the update, peeps here will make it happen! :highfive:

I disagree with the abandoning.. :)

I just updated my 4th DVP to 8773.

My old DVP was tired and beat up.. so for $120 on ebay I got me a brand new one.. :)

Until a QWERTY Portrait comes out for any other phone.. the DVP does about everything I need a phone to do and more.

The MS 'statement' seems to imply that new firmware isn't needed for the 7.8 update. In this case, I'd be surprised if Dell blocks the 7.8 update (as it improves customer satisfaction with little or no cost to Dell).

Either way, we'll probably know the answer before too long :)
