I must say, I've never seen a screen worse calibrated than the one in the Xperia Z Ultra I've bought today.
  • yellow tint (fixable in latest firmware, but then dark tones get messed up and pushed into blue tint...)
  • heavily compressed bright tones (ugly faces, dull colors)
  • heavily compressed dark tones (shadows completely crushed)
  • low gamma
  • heavy banding (produced by the crazy stretching of midtones)

:(
Is there any way to fix it? (maybe a gamma calibration control through a custom kernel, really saved my Nexus 4 before, which was bad, too)

Hmm, well that ain't normal. As you can see, there aren't any "display issues" thread in this subforum, and everyone around here are happy with their screens (no complaining until now at least), and all reviews of the device shows that the panel is very good with very accurate colors (which Erica Griffin also concluded with).

I believe you've got a defective panel. The screen should look very good with accurate colors, and acceptable black levels (in the dark. They are good in daylight).

Keep in mind that Sony uses two panels. Sharp and AUO. The Sharp is the best one, but the AUO isn't bad. I've had them both.

"All things considered, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra certainly has the best screen on a phablet at this point. The sheer size and the resolution advantage, combined with the decent to great performance in all other important aspects, see the Z Ultra inch ahead of the LG Optimus G Pro."

I do have to agree with most/all of the above

I agree, the screen on my Z Ultra is fantastic. Just wondering, how do I know whether my Ultra has the Sharp screen or the AUO one? Or is there an app in which it can read/scan my hardware and see what screen I have?

I am not sure if it will work, but you can install terminal emulator from google play and try:

cd /sys/devices/mdss_dsi_panel
cat panel_id

I actually find the AUO screen looking better than the Sharp one. Brighter and richer colours.

I'm the opposite. I've had both, and the first thing I reacted to when i got the Sharp panel was how good the contrast was compared to the AUO, so i'll have to disagree! :cowboy:
I'm guessing no matter what panel you get, every ultra will be different.

On that note, here is a side comparison between the two just for the hell of it. Sharp on the left and AUO on the right. Sharp has just the bare screen. No anti-shatter proof film. The AUO has the anti-shatter proof film and the Mocolo Premium Tempered Glass Screen Protector.

EDIT: Comparison pics were flawed.

Can't tell a difference. However your middle pic shows a differences because of the lighting in the room. Notice the one on the left has light from the doorway maybe? hitting it but the one on the right doesn't.

Either way, I believe this phone has the best screen besides the LG G Pro(I haven't any other phone to compare it to). Whenever I help my coworker with something on his G Pro, I start missing that screen when I had that phone.

Good eye!, though now that I look at it more. I think I might have had a defective screen on the sharp panel.
