[Q] Performance Issues on both Stock and CM10.1 ROMs

Hi There

I got my Nook HD+ a couple of months ago, and I've started noticing quite a bit of slowdown in Apps, in particular getting a lot of "xxx isn't responding, do you want to close it - Wait/OK messages.

I've installed various tools to monitor CPU/memory etc but not been able to. Running Cleanmaster to clear memory and caches sometimes seems to give some brief respte, but not for long> I also used Malwarebytes AV and found a trojan dialler, and removal of that againseemed to help for a little while, but the problems came back a few hours later.

I therefore decided to give the CM ROM a try and installed 10.1, and which I really like the interface and woul dlike to carrry on using it, it would seem that the problem is even worse on this version of Android. The basic laucher itself isn't too bad, but applications are barely usable, which initially made me wonder if I've got a hardware problem.

I'm using a Kingston 8GB memory card (I did read somewhere that somebody else had problems with speed on a similar SD card, but as far as I'm aware Kingston should be a decent brand)

I've been reading through the forums about the trim issue, and it would appear I have the MAGDA eMMC which is suseptible to the trim bug, here are the details on my version:

There seems to be a fair amount of debate about wwhether it's safe to try the fstrim fix along with 10.2 on this version of the chip. I'm also wondering if pulling the SD card and trying a hard reset might be worth trying.

Would anybody be able to to offer me some guidance on whether this is likely to be the trim issue, and whether I'm safe to try fstrim/Lagfix?

I have tried to read up as much as I can before posting, but there's a lot of information and I'm not entirely sure how much of it is currently in date, so I'm still not entirely certain whether this is what's affecting me, and what the best course of action from here is. Apologies in advance therefore if this has been covered elsewhere.

It does sound like you are experiencing LAG and are in need of trim. But you have the buggy emmc chip and I would not recommend it. Try booting to your CWM SD and going to mounts and storage and format 'data and datamedia'. See if that helps. An ordinary factory reset does not really format /data and will not make it better. That is why you still had LAG after installing CM10.1.

I've booted back into CWM, and the Mounts and Storage menu gives me the option of mounting or formatting several partitions:

/sytem
/cache
/emmc
/data
/sdcard

There doesn't look to be an option for "Format data and datamedia" however (I get the impression this should be a distinct option?).

I tried formatting just /data, after doing so and booting back into CM it started to run through the initial setup. The CWM version I'm using is v6.0.3.2.

A bit of further googling suggests that /data/media is hosted on /sdcard, but if I navigate through the filesystem it looks like my personal data from the stock install is /emmc, but I'm a bit wary of formatting this in case it affects the stock ROM. Coudl this be what I should be formatting instead?

Are you running CM10.1 on SD? I thought you replaced stock with CM10.1 on emmc. That was my basis for saying you need to format 'data and datamedia'. It uses the same /data that stock used, thus carrying over the LAG problem. An SD install puts /data on the SD (unless you used the hybrid SD install which then does use the same /data partition on emmc).

And I am not talking about /data/media. I am talking about 'data and datamedia'. That option actually formats all of /data including /data/media. A format /data with CWM does not "format" anything. It erases all of /data except /data/media, leaving your media files intact. An actual format is necessary to remove LAG.

Thanks for this! I did format 'data and datamedia' and this fixed the lag I have been experiencing. I had to register w/CM and it reloaded some apps from Google play and I had to re-install other apps using Apps Back-up and Restore. Not ideal having re-install periodically (monthly?) in order to keep it running smoothly.

This proves to me that these tablets need TRIM. However, I have an HD+ 16GB with MAG2GA Date:11/2012, FwRev 0x06. Do you think it would be safe to try KitKat on SDcard or would that still subject my Nook to bricking?

BTW, Bought this on the Mother's Day deal so, still under warranty

No, sorry, the CM10.1 install is running from the SD card.

Understood. When I couldn't find the "data and datamedia" option on CWM I did some googling, and "/data/media" returned a lot of hits, it seemed like a plausible alternative.

That is why you did not find that option. You need to use the CWM made for stock from my HD/HD+ CWM thread.

And the lag when running from SD is likely caused by the brand and class of your SD. It needs to be a SanDisk class 4.

That will put everything back but your media files. To save them, back them up manually to your SD or PC and manually restore them later. I know this is a pain to do but it is better than bricking your device.

And I don't know anything about kitkat on SD and trim. Even on SD some things are on emmc.

Right, understood. Sorry, when I made the original post I think I don't think I fully understood the purpose of the eMMC chip, obviously if it's running on a separate filesystem can't be the same problem. I've now got a Sandisk card on order, will give that a try next and go from there.
