Hi!

I was wondering how hard it would be to port a early release of android like 1.6 Doughnut to my Kindle?

It has a ARMv7 running at 800mhz, 256mb of ram and a Eink touch screen.

The kindle OS on it is based off Linux 2.6 so it should not really be that hard :)

Thanks for your time.

your right it shouldnt be that hard of a project, the nook simple touch is already running android 2.1 but with android 1.6 your almost unable to use any apps because everything is requiring 2.2 and up nowadays.

Hello again!

Hi I have a few questions

1.What os would you use to make the custom android? (I have a iMac running mac OSX)
2.What programs would you use to develop the custom android?
3.What version of android? (My kindle has only 2gb of storage and no microsd slot:(
Also it only has one hardware button which is the power button so how could you use a version older from ICS that doesn't emulate buttons?
4.The drivers I need are Display,Touch,Wifi and power button. so how would I get them?
5.I think my kindle could be rooted because it runs a custom distro.
6.How could I delete Kindle os and install android?
7.Would the linux 2.6 kernel work with android?
8.You can get the kindle os on the internet in a bin file. Would it have drivers that would work with android?

How should I start?

Thanks

I found the website at kdroid.org but it seems that the project has been abandoned for like 4 years. I tried flashing it on my kindle paperwhite 2 but after it boots it shows me a screen saying
"android is updating"
then it gets me to this blank white page with 3 Chinese buttons. I figured out that the left one will reboot the device, then go to this screen again. The center one will connect you to wifi and the right one will do nothing but show some loading signs and then do nothing. The version of Android seems to be ancient(4.x).
Anyone interested in trying to resupport this project and fixing these problems?
Prehaps android 6 or 5 will be enough.
More instructions here https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=341198&highlight=boot+kindle+android (although this seems to be abandoned as well)

OOPS,
It seems that this thread has been abandoned (did not check dates lol)
but just in case, here is some more useful info: if you are interested in resupporting such project
  • The original project is OLD and it runs on VERY OLD devices (typical with the Chinese lol)
  • The newest devices supported are the kindle voyage and kindle oasis
  • make sure you are good at using translators (lol, again)
  • the android system is in the esystem.bin file
  • you could build your own android system from the code amazon provides if you wanted to on a newer device
  • to ensure you can read(or translate the chinese) and for the sake of correctly rendering the chinese characters I reccomend you to do so in a chinese version of windows or other os(VM or hardware, whatever is good for you) and if you cannot read chinese there are tutorials for changing display language on the web.
  • Linux is reccomended for editing the esystem.bin file BUT
  • you can ONLY use windows to install the android system using the installer(from the mobilereads link above)
