I'm sorry if this is something that's obvious, but after searching and googling I have still not gotten an answer.

I've been trying to run several different GPS-apps on my Lumia 800. Some of them are:
- Sports Tracker
- Speed Tracker
- Marathon Free

What I've noticed is that only Marathon Free is able to disable the screen turning off, which translates to being able to actually log more than the timeout (5 minutes).

There are plenty of good reviews on Sports Tracker - none mention this problem. Is there some setting I've missed? Because I mean, they can't really mean that I should sit and tap the screen every now and then, just to make sure it doesn't turn off?

It's technically possible to turn off the screen timeout in apps (from a developer point). I can say more, it's as easy as 1, 2, 3. So I suggest you contact the developers and ask them if they would like to implement that feature for you. It will only cost them a few minutes of work...
