Really tired of the bloat on this tablet. Thinking about rooting it so that I can remove most of the Samsung junk. Thought about going one step further and flashing another ROM. What would be the downsides, if any, of doing this?

As a long time "rooter" of devices there are a few downsides.....
- usually voids warranty
- can not accept official Sammy updates
- must wait for a custom Rom to incorporate the update
- many custom Rom updates require (or is highly recommended) a fresh install meaning one must "setup the tablet" from scratch.

* not to say there aren't more positives about rooting and installing a custom Rom...you just asked about the negatives. Basically unless you load a custom Rom and stick with that for a while, you are usually doing a lot of updates and tinkering with Roms, settings, and kernels a lot as custom Rom writers ("devs"......God bless them) usually put out frequent updates trying better their product. If you like that then it's for you. If you don't it can be very aggravating.

I havent bought device and sold it before rooting it and do what i want with it , its real fun.Bad about rooting or custom roms is if you dont know what you doing you may lose your device
But if ya careful ,read and not flash anythin you see , you will be fine.

why android devices somehow beats IOS ? cause you can do what you want and let your device do what you want not device control you
as above said you may lose official updates , you always can go back to stock as it was as i did when i sold my preview devices
and root may stops some apps from working as they ask for unrooted devices :( and they are so few

PS: my note 2014 is still stock , not ready to miss with it , still playin with my note 2 :)

If we root, how are we suppose to go back to stock to accept kitkat? Nobody is deving for the device and I was thinking of rooting.

No, actually it makes the pen even better because you can add every app you want to run in a multiwindow /pen window, you can get 4 apps multitasking and so on :)

There a particular ROM that extends this multi-window feature or is it an app?

I dont know which device you exactly have, there is 1 custom rom which includes all apps in multiwindow. But ypu can get that with an app as well

SM-P600. I think I found the app on the market.

So, no control or functionality issues persist in custom ROMs like Paranoid Android or CM?

I once was all rah rah about flashing new roms but these days I just need root to tweak the stock ROM to my liking. I've removed most of the Samsung bloat, Knox and other stuff from my device...You would think I have a faster nexus 10 with S Pen and multi tasking. So I really don't mind the lack of development...
