Do you really getting 150mbps or 300mbps from your 11N wireless? No. Same for the 21mbps HSPA+. You will top out around 10mbps real world speed. Besides, your ping time will remain pretty high (around 200 to 500 ms).

Currently, with LTE in deloyment test, it is not uncommon to see test speed reachs 20 to 30mbps real world speed. And ping time should be much lower as well (<100ms). It has the potential to reach or exceed 100mbps actual transmission speed while HSPA+ will be on its last legs at 42mbps.

It's like back in the days on dial-up internet, would you argue a 56k dialup modem connection is as good as the 64k ISDN line? No.

LTE also has different network infrastucture and it represents future of wireless networking. If you think HSPA+ is good enough, you're in the same camp as AOL when it thought dial-up internet is good enough and stuck with it.

It's good enough for now, considering the tradeoffs involved with LTE.

Once someone can make an LTE handset that isn't a battery-hogging fatty, things will change, but HSPA+ is good enough considering that it has none of the size/weight/power penalties inherent to the current state of LTE.

In a handset, all LTE is good for right now is hitting your data limit wall faster while eating your battery and making your phone heavy.

Possibly wrong thread...but I have unlimited data (GPRS WAP UNLTD DOM - DPPB) that I had on my Captivate. Do I need to upgrade my plan to get the Faux G (HSPA+) speeds or am I getting all I can with my current plan/sim? Thanks!

You will get no data connection at all unless you update your plan to '4G' or create your own 3G APN and stuck with 3G.
I disagree. I do not have "4G" anywhere in my data plan. I have the old school iPhone unlimited data plan, and I was getting faster speeds than the "4G" phones IN the ATT store.

Its all about APN settings. This proves facts. This is on a 3G data plan.

Also if you are curious of my current APN settings, here is my post

Well I went ahead and upgraded. I did have to change the apn settings to get it to work originally.

I swear it's slower now though. Only getting 1 mb down in NYC. Was getting double that before.

You don't need to upgrade your plan - I have the exact same grandfathered-in plan, just got my SGS2 and my plan was automatically switched to GPRS WAP UNLTD DOM - HSDPPB (I can only assume the "HS" equals "high speed") and my download speed went up by almost 4x, even in the little backwater town I live in.

-Just not true.

This what my unlimited data plan shows as on my bill.

SMT ENTRPRS UNL GOOD

Anyone know what this is? I get anywhere from 1-4 megs down. I live in Northern NJ about 15 miles SW of NYC.

I didn't say '4G' plan has to be faster than 3G plan currently. In fact, in most cases, it makes no difference. I also has no '4G' in my 'upgraded' unlimited plan. But it is a fact that without upgrade your data plan, you can't use the '4G' network. Whether or not you can get faster speed is whole another topic.

It's called You Paid Too Much plan :) I know exactly what your plan is: Smartphone Enterprise Data Plan Unlimied With Good Messaging and probably is $45 or more monthly charge. AT&T tried to convince everyone that if you want to get Exchange Email push sync, you need that plan (and Good Messaging is a Push Email solution before Exchange ActiveSync was popular). But the $30 Personal Data Unlimited worked exactly the same.

No, it's always been $30 (before my 25% discount). Anyway, I just called AT&T and had them switch me to GPRS WAP UNLTD DOM - HSDPPB which they claim they did. So I look at my AT&T account and now it shows this:

I like the 200 message plan for $5 more. Never saw that before. But I don't want to change anything. My data speeds seem to have increased but my PING is like 1221 ms.

By the way. I have an INFUSE at the moment and not the GS2.

That is the soc code for 4G data.....so yes, you do have to switch your data plan to the correct one.

HS is a prefix for all 4G HSPA+ plans.

Did you do your upgrade in the store? I wouldnt call that automatically switch..

No joking consumers will no more about a product after 30 minutes of researching a product on line in comparison to employees at BestBuy and your local cell store. I have had nothing but bad experiences when discussing phones or laptops with sales associates. It amazes me that they really don't know that much about the products they sell. Heck all I need is my scanner app like Red Laser and I am good to go. I have heard a sales person tell a gentleman some ridiculous things about the Atrix and I had to politely correct him because this guy was pulling specs out of the air..

Ok, so when it remains the same "Smartphone Personal" data plan on my bill, with the same unlimited data cap, and the same $30/mo cost, but has higher speed capability prefix code added, it may technically be a different soc to the rep, but really isn't a "different" plan. We're splitting hairs at this point.

My point was A: I did not have to change my data plan in any substantive way at all to get 4G speed, and B: if you have unlimited data now, you don't have to give that up to get higher speed.

And yes, I upgraded at a corporate store specifically to hammer out these details BEFORE they hit my account and I had a fight with AT&T on my hands.

It probably won't have any effect right now but at any time AT&T can decide to limit the speed of those using the wap.cingular APN (i.e. the old 3G APN).

If you are paying $30+/mo for your data right now, you won't lost it even if you ask AT&T to change it. If you are paying less than that, well that's the whole purpose for AT&T to add this new APN to screw you. Of course, you can create your WAP.Cingular APN and bypass that.
