Man magnets are not good for any device just stay away from it. Don't listen to the ones saying otherwise. I mean it's common knowledge. ....

I have the samsung folio case and don't use it just for this reason. When I found out there were magnets it came off for good.

A-ha! That must be the reason why HDDs in my PC fail every few+ years - thank you Sherlock.

But seriously - custom cases are another story - but I cannot imagine nobody in Samsung would remember to check what is the long-term impact of their own case magnets on screen digitizer. At least for two reasons:
2. warranty replacements generate losses
1. they are not idiots
They don't care nor test enough long term effect of these cases....you really think a multi billion dollar conglomerate company that makes MUCH MORE than phones will spend on testing....This company builds ships and all sorts of stuff. Once they've got your c notes they could care less

Em... true also, that is common knowledge of magnetic against electronic device, i am using the samsung book case from the day i purchased (1 month ago), seems like everything is working fine, i will keep using of the case and see what happen since i still have one year warranty with samsung. ;)

Know what, those really worried about little magnetism killing their device could perhaps consider either ripping the digitizer off or stop using the note at all. This is because the wacom itself is based around elecromagnetism technology and generates a constant magnetic field over the surface to make the s-pen work.
Yes magnets can harm certain devices to certain extent, however all depends on the underlying technology and components being used.
Considering long run impact, battery and other components might give up much earlier with normal use than effects of magnets.
The strength, the size and the pattern of the magnet being used are the critical factors, similar to voltage and current in electronics.
As long as you are within acceptable tolerance for the device/component you should be good.
I am using a third party cover since june 1 and it had strong magnets in back flap that caused all sorts of issues. So I took magnets out of back flap and the cover with front panel magnets has been working fine since. I find it hard to believe that front magnets would be any different for a third party cover, which leads me to believe that there is a magnetic shield at the front side making for a much lesser impact, also evident from info at wacom site about the digitizer tech.
Hope it brings some enlighenment to the topic.

Well, I've been using the official book cover for must be 4 months now and i've been checking for issues or dead areas regularly... haven't had a single issue.

Not sure I'd trust a third party case though...

Just wanted to bring this thread to life and report that i had the same problem with my Note8.0 (5120) and had to send it in for repairs.

But before i sent mine in i did some testing.

- I could get it working sometimes by tapping a bit harder than normal on the screen and then i could work nicely after lock/unlock but after a while it gave up again.
- I could get it working by placing a magnet on the backside of the Note, just between the camera and the simcardslot, but then it would not work again after a lock/unlock or if I just slightly twisted the case as it would if u could place it in the pocket of your pants.
- Sometimes it worked after I had the Note turned of for a while, but it could just as well not work when I turned it back on again. But it would give up again after the twisting or the lock/unlock.

Writing or drawing with fingers worked all the time, so it surely was the digitizer for the S-pen, and my Note has now been at the serviceplace for a week (Store tells me it could take 2 weeks) and i will report back as soon as i get more info on what was broken/replaced.

I had been using 2 different magnetic cases (third party, did ofc not tell the clerk at the store that) and one of them was really irritating and kept locking the screen when you flipped the cover to the backside of the tablet and activating the magnetlockingmachanism. The other case has worked nicely but both of them was making it hard to use at work so i had been using a siliconecase for the last 3-4 weeks when i started noticing these problems. And about a week before i noticed it i managed to drop the Note from about 1 meter height (3 feet).

So there are a few factors that could cause this problem, still the weird part is that the screen kept working as long as i had the magnet placed on the backside of the tablet. Hopefully the servicecenter does not blame me for this as i am not to keen on starting a case against them at this time of year :)

I did ofc clear root and binary counter before i sent it in, so atleast they cant blame "flashing" as the reason for the problem. Plus i really need my Note8.0, using my Tab3 7.0 atm and, even tho its a ok tablet buildwise, it aint a Note 8.0 ;)

Common knowledge? From a forum where I have yet to see a single expert opinion much less actual data backing up this "common knowledge" issue?

Magnets do have an effect on the digitizer while they are actually acting on the digitizer. I have personally seen this when I flip my case back, and the magnet is actually strong enough to affect the s-pen in that particular area through the back of the device. But as soon as I remove the cover from the back of the device (just leave it open like a book), everything instantly normalizes. I have been using an aftermarket magnetic flip cover since April with no ill effects other than what I just mention.

Look, nothing wrong with giving an opinion, in fact I just did exactly that. The difference is, I made it clear in my post that it is nothing more than my opinion. But there is no reason to needlessly scare other people when there is absolutely zero objective evidence to show that magnets in a properly designed case will cause irreversible damage to the digitizer. I am not talking about anecdotal evidence gathered from a few posts on this matter.

Just a little update on how Elgiganten (electronics-store in sweden) and Deltaservice (an norwegian serviceshop, authorized by samsung) handled this problem.

I handed in my broken Note to the store where i bought it (Elgiganten, in sweden) on the 1st december, we did write down the problem thoroughly, explaining where in the screen the problem was and that it was only when using the pen and not when using fingers. I thought that it would be no problem for Deltaservice to sort it out as they more or less just have to replace the screen with the digitizers to get it to work.

I didnt hear anything about the repair, even tho the store promised me updates along the way, for one and a half week, so i called in on the 12th to ask if it was going to covered by warranty or what was going on. They then gave me a vague reply that "they have been wating for parts for a couple of days". and shortly after i got a text telling me that the parts needed was expected to arrive early the next week.

Next week comes and i call them again on tuesday (17th) to check what was going on. I had still to get it confirmed that I was not to blame for the problem, I ofc understood that since they ordered parts it would fall under the warranty. I then get a reply that the part had arrived and they was about to repair it.

Thursday the 19th decemvber i get a text telling that i can come and pick up my now repaired unit. So i drive to the store and the serviceguy there hands me the workreport from deltaservice and it says "Pen replaced, tested menus, volume, sound, buttons, display: OK. Note: normal wear and tear". Well it was all in swedish, but all in all they blamed me for wearing out the S-Pen but they replaced it for me free of charge.

I then get abit worried that they havent fixed the problem so i start the Note in the store and shows the serviceguy that the problem is still there and that they havent fixed anything at all... even the pen is used as one can clearly see that it wasnt new.

Deltaservice checked the tabled on the 5th and then they have been wating for a replacement-pen for 13 days before they sent the tablet back to the store.

So the serviceguy then tells me that "well they have to get another chance to repair it then". This is where i get quite upset and tells him that i will not accept that he sends it to the same useless place again and that i have now been without the tablet for 19 days and that they didnt even lend me one when i handed mine in. He then tells me that they have no tablets to lend to me.. where i say that then they pick some up in the store and hand it to me as i will not accept beeing without the tablet for another 19 days (would end up beeing end of january with all the holidays and **** coming up).

The serviceguy has to ge talk to his boss, and then comes out asking me if i can live without the LTE for the time beeing and when i say that i can he wants to lend me a Tab3 7.0. When i tell him that i actually bought the Note because of the pen, he says "Well i dont know how you use the pen..." I get quite upset again and tells him that i will not in any way accept such an inferior tablet as a temporary one.. after some talking he goes back to his boss and then comes out with a Note 10.1 WiFi and asks if this is enough.... He went from not having eny tablet at all to having one that is the same as the note8.0 (more or less) just alittle bigger... I accept the temporary one and we agree that this will be handled as fast as possible, I know that all this is just his way of getting rid of me as fast as possible and I get confirmation on my thoughts when it takes them two more workdays before they send it in for repairs again.

Ok this wasnt the short update it was ment to be..

Finaly I have my Note back, it only took 7 weeks and having to send it back to Deltaservice since they didnt fix it.. well all that is covered in my previous post.

When they finally changed the correct part, and not the S-Pen, they replaced the whole screen, and since it has been x-mas and new years it took some extra time but atleast it got changed and not once did they claim it was my own fault for breaking the digitizer.

Wont be using a magnetic case again tho, no matter if it killed the digitizer or not, will be all siliconecases from now on :p

I am not sure what killed my digitizer/screen so I cant say if it was a magnatic case or not. I have used a magnetic case on my Note, but not a original one.

Been using the official book cover for many months now and no problems. It's a lovely case imho.

OK... Thanks guys... I've bought the original one...

Ori Samsung Book cover

I am using the original Samsung book cover since last year October until now, everything seems good ;) so, i think of the magnetic of ori book cover does not have any bad impact to the screen. Safe to use.

As i have said earlier in the thread, i got my screen replaced cuz of the faulty digitizer some two months ago.. and tonight i broke down again... not even used a cover on it this time and never even had it close to any magnets or anything...

The electronicsstore will have a not-so-pleasant visit tomorrow when i wake up, and if they even hit about sending it in again for repairs i am probably going to break the tablet over the counter and throw it at the clerk... :)

Dead spot on screen

I was using sketchbook for galaxy yesterday and found there was a spot at the top center of the screen, my s pen would not write on, but my finger would. After reading a few comments I found a magnetic case could and at times does interfere with the screen. I took my tablet out of the magnetic case and that solved my problem.
I wanted to pass this along as long term exposure to the magnet might cause permanent damage, I'm not sure. When I removed my tablet from the case it immediately solved my problem.
I just thought I'd pass this along.
