k i installed a corn kernel already so now im wondering if i already have recovery....

Did u flash the kk4 one click and then flash kk4 corn kernel ?
....either way if u flashed corn kernel it has cwm recovery included.

that i did. the phone works fine, but i downloaded rootchecker and it says i dont have root access. when i try to boot into recovery it says system corps and has a corn logo but doesnt take me to recovery. just boots up.
Use that Utility to get Root or even to just get into Recovery...that is where u navigate through the menu options to find where to get Root.
Or just use that Utility to get to it.

what about the new captivate 4.2.1 rom? any ideas what i would need to install it? it got locked up while installing the zip. it installed very quickly then it went to the boot logo screen and was stuck
If you were coming from any ROM besides another Jellybean ROM then this is actually normal. Just boot back into recovery using the three button combo and flash the ROM again. On an off chance you might have to flash it a third time but then you just need to flash gapps if it's required for the ROM you're using and then you should be good to go.
You didn't do anything wrong it's just that the partition layout and kernel changes when you are jumping software versions like you are. So the system needs to reboot before the ROM you're going to can flash properly.
You should read the instructions carefully before flashing. Some of them are really specific and require a couple flashes before flashing the main ROM itself. Also don't forget the Gapps (they're ROM specific so make sure you flash the right one).
Flashing a jb ROM from gb will have to rewrite the partition so 2 flashes are needed (one after the other).
You'll end up in the same boat as before if you're not more careful..

so, i SHOULD be able to use the three button combo after it locks up and re-flash? it would be a battery pull, 3 button combo, then re-flash the rom?

im going with the team remics 4.2.1 and the gapps package as reccomended. ive only go experience with the droid one and the xoom, and this is seeming more like my xoom which i have on 4.2 also
Yep, 3 button combo into recovery and reflash. You can flash the Gapps afterwards.
