I enlisted in to the navy and i currently stay in the barracks. No wifi or anything here. I use my phone that has tethering to use my laptop to game. i blow through my 5 gig plan in about a week and i would like to upgrade to the unlimited plan but still be able to tether. Anyone have a work around. Either a tethering app (wired or wifi is fine) or if rooting will do the trick. I have plenty of experience rooting just my phone currently is not since i turned it in through warrenty. But would just like the simplest work around that actually works.

i actually have this exact same question...well the part about wanting to know the easiest way to use tethering; more specifically I have the special $30 monthly plan that walmart/tmobile have together and it has unlimited 4g (maybe capped at 5gb?) and would love to tether to a laptop or tablet and I could for a while but now it has gone away...would rooting help me get back tethering or is it completely gone for me?

thanks in advance.

I would suggest downloading foxfi. From here: http://www.foxfi.com/, or from the market. But, a word of caution. T-mo appears to be detecting un-authorized tethering. So make sure to also download the FoxFi addon, and go through the steps to use a proxy. Otherwise you will get a text from T-mo saying something to the effect of "stop tethering or we will cut off your internet". Then if you continue with the offending usage, they will eventually cut it off. I am not sure exactly how they are detecting it right now.

Hi there I know of a application that works perfectly its called WiFi tether I know the correct settings to get the application working if your interested pm me and I can give you the settings. This app had worked for. Me in 5 out of 6 different roms. My device is rooted but I don't "think" it's a requirement for the app to work. It's worth checking out. Is simply called WiFi tether. You can find it in the play store. Best wishes.when I used this app as far as I know T-Mobile was ok with it because I never heard anything from them about it... I used it for several months without problems. But you never know about these things. But it never gave me problems nor did T-Mobile for using it. However use at own risk because like said in above post if they do find out you do run a risk of getting cut off. Its a risk.

Hi there first switch phone off, then pull battery wait 2to 3 seconds, then put battery back in and switch on phone. Then start app, go to settings go to device profile, switch to generic ics, then still in settings go to set up method, the set up method is wext ad-hoc. Encryption is auto, if you turn on its WiFi encryption. Channel is 11. Make sure routing fix is checked. Now you can tether. One thing I've noticed is After you get the settings correct EVERY tethering session start with the pulling of battery. Then it should start again without any problems. This has worked for me in 4 out of 5 roms. Just follow the settings to a tee. And for some reason each time I'd tether I'd have to do the battery pull. Then it would work. I really hope this helps. It has always worked for me with all but one Rom I have tried. I wish you the best. You might want to write down the settings for future. This is what I did that's why I had to wait till I got home to give them to you.let me know if you had success . This is what I use and it should work for you also. Hope this helps.

Also just so you know, vipers tethering works perfectly and you don't have to pull battery all the time. It's really easy to use and ready all the time. Just press tethering set up your network on computer put in pass key which is visible And start tethering. I now use viper Rom because the tethering is so easy. Hope this also helps.
