Is this being refreshed? I am tempted to buy this now even as old as it is as it still has darn good specs and is not quite on par with the new Samsung Tab S it is NOT far behind at all... Would hate to but this then there be a new model eleased... Few questions:

1) I was looking at a chromebook but I still like a tablet for my android apps - with the new and improved keyboard is it sturdy enough to have on your lap like a laptop and be able to browse the web, etc.?

2) Is there another option I shojld be considering with a keyboard that is on par due to this model being so old?

I dont know, there are some things i like and some i dont like. Power is enough for me, with cm12 its allmost perfect for me, but theres a keyboard problem so im not sure if i would buy it today. Hard to say, personaly i hope there will be a refresh, if it will be with working dock like the tf201 and allmost state of the art specs ill buy it

Yeah it definitely seems powerful enough as a tablet alone and seems to be on par with new tablets being put out today. The only iffy thing I have is the keyboard docking component - as sometimes maybe rarely I want to be able to use it on my lap and browse the web or forums and use it like a laptop...

Or do I buy a Samsung Tab S for the price it would cost for the TF701 + ketboard... Never had one so torn.

Yeah I am leaning towards the 701t as the actual Asus store has it for $319 for the tablet and keyboard dock together...

This is a great tablet! I have done much research and it seems like anything that has less than 2 gigabyte RAM is pretty much in the dust these days. That sounds like a good deal above! :D

I keep going back and forth... Now I am leaning towards the Galaxy Tab S - as spec wise is right on par maybe even slightly better than TF701. A little more up to date and since it seems Asus is not planning on refreshing the TF701 then a bit worried about RMA and support.

Also the Tab S getting Lollipop vs. TF701 nobody knows is making me lean that way as well.

I'm in the exact same boat as you, deerhunter.
I LOVE my tf700 running omni 5.1.1 (thanks to sbdags and company) but android seems to want to phone home so badly that everything slows down on this aging device's older 2.4ghz hardware. I've tried holding other premium slabs but i've become accustomed to the transformer way.

I like to play emulators so x86 is off my radar for now which is why I've had to steer clear of ASUS for the past year or so. Not only is the galaxy tab s tempting in the modern hardware, it appears they are going the way of 4:3 with all of their new slabs so this is the last chance for a while at premium 16:10 slabs from sammy. My main desire is to get better (than my tf700) wifi performance and memory architecture. Samsung wins in these 2 departments... but DAMN if I can't live without the stay power of the extra battery, the convenience of the full size usb port and the full size sd card reader! I just want it ALL! If only samsung had any interest in making a 2 in 1... holy schism that would blow my brain!

i will say, unlike asus zen ui, i actually care about some of the functionality built into samsung's android. the split screen is nice on the massive 2560x 1600 display, something i would actually use for quick copy/paste if it had a kb dock. also the floating video window is nice. I would miss that if I had to eventually flash custom "m" or beyond.

I would not say the 2 are nearly equal in spec. The Exynos in the tab s is much more modern, and the radio is 802.11ac. While the tf701 CAN run desktop gl, nothing seems to take advantage of it except nvidia software and old thd games. I wish snapseed or adobe cc would use the cuda cores just sitting there waiting to be used. The power in the Exynos may only be web gl, but it's web gl that virtually every (android) developer will actually put to the test.
