set everything up manually. Save your MMS pics to your sdcard. If you have something important in your SMS, forward it to your email...

My comment is not useless, you got an error, posted on here about, and I tell you not to do it because it doesn't work... This is where you should realize something, "HEY, THIS DOESN'T WORK, maybe I should find another way to do it". Seems you didn't get that far, so I have given you an alt route.

If you need a one-click solution for everything and refuse to think outside of the box, you shouldn't be using android. <3 my iPhone4 and iTunes, click backup, click restore, all done. (btw, iPhone4 is my primary phone.)
Touchy aren't we? I am here to find a (Simple) solution to make the process a litle easier. Like most, or maybe more than some I have lots of data, and it's pretty painful setting everything up from scratch. (especially if you changed 3 ROM's in a couple days). I would prefer for the process not to take several hours to get everything back to the way I like it.

I did figure out that it didn't work, which is obviously why I'm here. Again, trying to find a solution that DOES work. I'm an IT guy by trade, but, not a coder, and new to the Droid scene. I do appreciate the effort from ALL of the app/ROM developers

I have an iphone4 for work and despise it. I had a 3G for the last 2 years. I find nothing appealing about it, or iTunes. In fact, the sycn/backup for iphone I'm not fond of either. The ONLY thing IMO the iphone does well that the Droid doesn't is OUTLOOK integration, and Itunes. I have no idea where to even begin to buy music on my droid (as if I buy music, "just sayin")

There are pro's and con's to both I suppose, but, I whole-heartedly prefer the Captivate. I'm actually drooling over the Windows Phone 7, but, I'll give them a while to get up to speed.

Regardless, it's just that you came off, and are still coming off as a bit condescending. I understand this is your release. I do enjoy it, thanks. Just simply saying "DO not" without suggesting an alternative (aside from different hardware) really isn't helpful.

Extremely condescending... but what does that have to do with finding a solution, which I offered in the text you quoted and you are still going off about no solution and failed to present one yourself and decided to just go off on me about not handing you everything on silver platter...

edit..

Oh hey, moved to q/a, back to the dev hideout!! bye..

Your "solution" was to save my attachments and FWD SMS's to email. That's not really ideal. I would like to maintain the SMS/MMS as is, with threads, attachements, etc. Maybe I'm being picky.

I don't have a solution myself. That's why I'm here, trying to get input. For F#$k's sake man.

My original IDEA was that I could restore back to 2.1 and use an APP that would allow me to save the TEXTS, AS IS, flash back to your release and restore the data. Obviously TiBu isn't the solution. Other's have offered other apps, but, none that seem to do this flawlessly.

If it's not possible, it's not possible. That's why I'm here. I uderstand that you do this for free, as a hobby, or whatever, but, if you were in the business of selling your warez, would you have the same attitude towards your customers? I would gladly have this discussion with you via PM or email, but, you have no contact info listed.

I never intended to start any kind of battle, or whatever with you. Just a guy trying to make his life a little simpler while enjoying the quality product you provide. If I would or could develop software perhaps I'd be able to offer a better solution. For now I'll just assume that there's no feasable way to make this work in the manner I desire. Thanks again for Froyo!

Maybe I'll give that a try. The TXT's are really the only thing that has me stuck. I have a clockwork backup of my 2.1 image that has tons on it, I have new one's since I've been testing these ROM's.

OK, well, maybe not JUST the texts, but, trying to stay on topic here.

I find myself in an odd spot though. I would like to get all my texts consolidated though so that I can make images of both the old OS, and the new OS, however, I know that if I use clockwork to backup everything as is, it will likely "break" when going backwards.

I'd like to try BETA 6 as well, but, there's even more hesitation as I actually dig car mode (although the music button doesn't work), like moxier, and a few other things that were removed. (Now I've digressed)
Download the app and back up all your new texts. I'd make a copy of that whole folder and back it up on your desktop just in case.
From there, do what you would normally do to back it up, and Odin Once Click back to stock. You'll be on JF6, and you can restore your CW backup with all the settings and your old texts that it has stored. From there, again run SMS Backup & Restore, and copy that file just for safety's sake.
Load up Cog2.2B6 and restore everything you've been doing that isn't system data (although like you said, there are some portions that won't give errors) and then restore your SMS through SMS B&R, restoring the texts from 2.1 first, then the texts from 2.2 secondly. It should maintain the thread structure, and you should be able to have all your apps.
It can be a pain and take a while longer than you'd anticipate, but that's all part of flashing ROM's. I've gotten to the point where past TiBu, it only takes about 15 mins to get everything back to exactly how it was.

That seems like the best course of action. Thanks

Do you have a suggestion for backing up the "folder" that contains the TEXTS. Not sure where it is. Again, I kinda have stuff everywhere. I was able to reload much of what I had simply by mounting my SD card to my PC and copying everything, but that shotgun approach kinda sucks, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't copy some of the sytem folders. (how could it while they are in use)

Sorry for asking a trivial question

SIDENOTE: I fond this app on another site: Android Manager WiFi. Seems to be similair to Kies and New PC Studio for anyone that owned older Samsungs. I does have Outlook sync, Syncs MMS/SMS, Photos, Videos, Music and more. I've only started testing it, but, seems like a nice app

Should be right on the SD card, folder called SMS Backup & Restore. I just suggest backing them up to your computer for safety's sake. It's not mandatory.

Sorry, misunderstood. I thought we were talking about the default DB location. I mount and copy everything the PC will see before I load anything. At least that way I have all my TiBU and Clockwork stuff on my PC

Interestingly enough I didn't realize it before, but, all the contacts that were on my phone (Not Gmails, FB, MS) are gone as well...I used MyBackup, but all that did was duplicate my online contacts...

I hate to beat a dead horse here and be stubborn, but, it's the weekend and I decided to give this another crack...

I backed up my current call log and texts with SMS Backup & Restore and Call Log Backup and Restore...

I deleted all my contacts

I decided to try one more time since I was having syncing issues with contacts and soocial, and I'm digressing again...

Anyway, I was about to master clear and reload my old ROM but I restored (against all advice) the following via Titanium Backup:

[CONTACTS/CALLS] Contacts Storage
[SMS/MMS/APN] Dialer Storage
[SMS/MMS/Prefs] Messaging

All is restored, contacts, call logs, and MMS/SMS (Correction, call logs didn't restore and it overwrote the texts I got in the last two weeks

NO ERRORS

Now, I don't know if one has a DB link to the others, and since it was all randomly restored before I might not have restored these 3 items. I don't know if it's because my account sync is disabled, or because my SIM is out, because I deleted my contacts beforehand

Oh, and this time I was on BETA 6

There are a ton of variables, in other words, but, now that I have it all up on 2.2 BETA 6, I'm wondering the best course of action.

Can I use TiBu to backup those 3 items, since the backed-up version is currently 2.1 and I have a clockwork image of my 2.1 image, and if I use this do you think it will work again? If I say move to BETA 6.5, 7, etc. I doubt it will be backwards compatable, but, that's hardly a concern

UPDATE...Problem Solved?

So, I guess I spoke too soon.

Was getting all my contacts in order, joined, etc...

INSERTED MY SIM

rebooted

Forced Close Errors galore

SO, I have no idea what the SIM does that would cause the errors, but, pulled the SIM back out and no errors...

There you have it

No it won't work and it isn't backward compatible. The beta versions of Cog are all 2.2. No backed up system apps+data from 2.1 can be restored from TiBu to 2.2. You will only get FC's and more trouble. That's the reason why we told you not to restore from TiBu. It's only useful if you're reflashing the same firmware version because something else got borked.

See, it's from those backups you restored.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I was asking if I could restore 2.2 system data from BETA 6 onward.

I realize it wouldn't be backwards compatable.

Doesn't matter. I've been throwing ROM's at it all night

I'm sure it was from the stuff I restored, just odd that the SIM's presence alone would cause the FC's

so i have been messing with cognitive all day, after the first flash and restore from titanium i kept getting the phone stopped error repeatedly. i tried restoring the default rom but didn't work...i didn't know about the voodoo fix needing to be disabled then. i booted into recovery and clicked reinstall then in clockwork i selected cognitive from sd and re-flashed, performed restore again and again i got the phone stopped error. by this time i had read up and found this post so i flashed to cognitive for the 3rd time and installed tibu, then deselected the dialer storage sms and the sms messaging and performed restore leaving these 2 out and now no phone stop error. so maybe this will help someone out... i didn't have that many messages as i just got the phone yesterday so it worked out for me. thanks to whoever noticed the sms was the problem causing the phone error:)

When ever you flash it is best not to restore any systems apps or info just user apps. It is likely that your problem was caused by restoring a 2.1 system app to a 2.2 rom

Captivate
Cog 2.2
