[Q] Trouble flashing kernels

I've tried flashing a couple different kernels over a couple different roms and haven't had any success. I've tried the matr1x kernel and marmite kernel over CM10 and SlimBean, and I either get loops at the google screen or just a black screen with the soft keys illuminated. I first tried flashing over a rom I had been running for a while, then tried on a fresh install. I made sure both kernels were JB versions, any suggestions? Not sure what I'm doing wrong here, kernels were always pretty easy before.

there's a CM version of the kernel and a non-CM version. make sure you flash the correct version for the specific rom.
a CM-based rom should have a CM version of the kernel, and an AOSP-based rom should have non-CM version.
