Today ASUS answered and told me that the problem is that the repair shop changed my mainboard and sat an incorrect serial number (when it was sent in for dock problems and loose front glass). So I have to send it in again.
Looking at the service report I see that they have only changed parts in the keyboard dock. The tablet also reports the same serial number and MAC-address as before the repairs. The serial number also matches the one on the box. So I find it unlikely that they have even changed the mainboard.

Since they didn't correct the loose front glass when it was in for reparis, well, I guess it's best to send it back while I still have warranty anyway. Sigh...

Shows how little they know.... What needs to be changed is their database. All it takes is a few keystrokes - and somebody who knows where and why. Which probably is the bigger problem.

Now my question is, what's the best ROM to unleash this beast? Do I go with CM11? or is there something better for power?

Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
It's unleashed already! :)
There's a total of 3 custom roms for this tablet. Not much trouble to try them all, but don't expect big performance improvements. It's going pretty darn well even on stock.....

I had similar issue, and solved by factory reseting(unlock will do this either) and *not login Google*.
Thanks for the idea, but I have tried that too a couple of times. I am pretty sure I have the same ASUS database problem that many TF700 had, since I can not register my device at the ASUS Device Tracker site.

Update:

After been waiting for a month, I got it back from the service shop. They had changed the mainboard and "I/O board". It still has got the same serial number, I guess they can program the old serial number to the new mainboard.

In my problem description I wrote that I couldn't use ASUS Device Tracker or the ASUS Bootloader unlock tool. (That's why customer support told me to send it in again).

Do you think that it works now? Of course not. I guess it would be way too much to ask if you expect them to really try if it works before sending it back.
On the service note it just says: "Problem: System unstable, touch misaction". I don't know where they got this from, but it is not a word anywhere about my actual problems.

So back to customer support now, great...

You do know that the Device Tracker will never work with this right...
It says on the web site
Devices running Android version 4.4.x (KitKat) or later are not currently supported
You are on 4.4 so it will not work.

What to say about ASUS customer service?

Opened a case January 8th when I got it back from the workshop with the same problem. I kindly asked them to look into the problem with missing serial numbers in their databases since I have read about other people with this problem.
Got an answer four days later (12th) that they are going to research the problem.
A week later (20th) I asked about the progress with my case. I got an reply today that it has been taken over by level 2 customer support and they think the problem is that the workshop has changed the motherboard without setting the original serial number. They are now waiting for an answer from the workshop.

Where is the logic in that? I have a problem, they tell me to send it to workshop which doesn't fix it, and now ASUS thinks the workshop has caused the original problem?

Btw the serial nr that my TF701 reports is the same as the original serial nr on my box and on the workshop report.

Gmail is not needed to unlock a TF-701T

This is an old thread by now, but I am posting this for any new folks trying to unlock a TF701. My experiences yesterday were similar to many others:
1 - disabled Google's 2-step verification
2 - called Asus (again don't say unlock, that kills the deal)
3 - tried and tried but was not patient enough to go for the 100 or more attempts reported by others to work

Finally I followed advice given by a guy that was going through the same torture with a TF301 I think. What works is to delete the Google account on the tablet, and then use the Asus unlock tool. The program will say that it notices that you don't have a Gmail address and will ask if you want to proceed. That was it. The program went ahead and unlocked right after that, and I was able to complete the root.

The way I look at it there was no downside to this. I knew the process was going to completely wipe the previous install anyway so the work involved to re-do the install was the same regardless. I hope this can save others the agony of losing 4 hours trying to get the unlock tool to work as intended.

Dproffitt I havent had any success with unlocking my tablet. I get the famous "an unknown error occurs, which may be a network connection issue. Please wait and try again later" I have contacted ASUS they told me they shut the server down that deals with the bootloader unlocking. He claimed it has been down for 2-3 years...wtf? Anyways when did you acheive unlock?

Look at the date of the post...
I know of several people who unlocked just a few weeks ago. The Asus reps don't know what they are talking about, as usual.
Factory reset the tablet, delete the Google account, and try the tool again.
And keep trying....

I have done the unlock op on two different 701s with the most recent about a month ago. The main issue is just like bernbdlb says is that it will not recognize your Google account information when that part comes up. So delete the account and when that part of the unlock comes up it will note that your 701 doesn't show an account and do you want to proceed to which you say yes. Don't worry, because losing the account information and starting all over is part of the process anyway.
Always remember that asking Asus anything about unlocking tablets will net you nothing but shrugs. They will not acknowledge that the app even exists. Get your help here just like you are doing now. Let us know how it goes.

I contacted asus with my error on thurs(asus technical support via email). I received response last night and was asked for serial, mac adresses and build number. Hours later I was told my info had been updated on the asus servers and to try unlock again... And it worked !!! Thanks to all @ xda

Now that I'm unlocked what recovery/rom should I install?

Well for recovery you have the choice between CWM 6.0.5.1 or TWRP
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64731200&postcount=122
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tra...overy-kang-twrp-tf700t-2-8-x-xarea51-t3121989

TWRP has a working touch interface so it's much easier to use than CWM where you have to use the buttons to interact.
But I went back to CWM after running TWRP for a while. It had some funny quirks, I did not quite trust it. I have no problem with a buggy rom but my recovery I want to be sure of....
Your choice.

For a Rom there's only one rule: You try them and decide. CM, Zombi-POP, even the rooted stokc rom are all good. Give them a try

I have the same problem and have had it for at least for a year.
My story is this:
I had my tablet rooted, a couple years ago, Loved it. Heavily used it. Dropped it.
Got it repaired at ASUS Repair, even though it was in warranty, I had to pay.

Now:
It was returned to me with 4.4.2, I have not gotten the unlocker tool to work since then. There must have been 200+ clicks to unlock by now. Nothing. I have done everything according to this thread. Reset tablet. No microSD card. Can't degrade firmware to anything, get a error on installation. created a new Google account, turned on the weaker Google Apps Function. Still not unlocking.
I have sent in a support email to ASUS lets hope they are as benevolent towards me as they were to the other people.

If someone has some suggestions. (Other than a hammer), I would love it.

Hello
Have you had any success yet on 4.4.2?
Did the suggestion by dgcruzing help you out?

Try to reset it it.. don't put a Google account on... then load in the unlocker...
Having a Google account on it will stop it from unlocking.. seems to be a bug there..
But that's how I have done two of them over the last 6 months..

Here's a post I made on the procedure..
