Hi i'm new here so sorry if this is in the wrong place :(
So i just got the captivate i897 for att. But the thing is i want tmobile and to root it So my real question is:
Should i root or unlock the phone first?
If i root it and flash a rom will i have to unlock the phone again?
And will the phone get bricked?

First you will want to root it. Go here to do so http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266 It will get you rooted and then if you use this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761045 and it will walk you through how to unlock your phone to use on any carrier.

I've used this exact unlock method and it is permanent. However if you were to revert to stock software you will loose your root access but that can be easily regained.

Okay so what should i avoid to not get my phone bricked? and if it does How would i use Odin to restore it?
Last question sorry, i just wanna be extra careful ><
As long as you don't flash bootloaders, you will never brick. Flashing bootloaders is only needed when going from Froyo to GB.
