Sounds like the network that u r connecting to may have one frequency that the captivate can use and so sometimes u get a signal and sometimes not.
This is what happens if u try to use the captivate on t mobile---u can only get the edge.
U need to look at that networks frequencies and see if that is the case as far as what the captivate is designed to work on.

You should look into flashing a custom rom, with a custom modem. I have serendipity 7 flashed on mine, and I get full bars where ever I go. I am also on att though. Serendipity 7 comes with its own custom bootloaders, kernel, and modem i believe too. I get very good service, and data connection (HSDPA). I think it's hsdpa, whatever the "H" means.

Just wondering..

Out of curiosity, Limitz, when you're getting those full bars of yours, what signal strength are you getting under 'About Phone'? Been thinking of switching to a new modem (I9000UGKG3, Slim ICS 3.4, Semaphore 1.0.0) but it's hard to know what's normal without a frame of reference.

I'm running an AT&T captivate in Malaysia running on the Maxis network GSM/WCDMA. You just need to make sure you have the right things installed.

Under your Settings>About Phone, what do you have listed for the following sections:

- Android Version
- Baseband version
- Kernel Version

if i did that custom ROM flashing for my modem !!! it does not relate to which network i am using ? when ever i install it will work ?

sorry i have a question you mean by " ROM flashing"

a driver for my modem because of the hard reset i have done ?
