I just got a used SCH-i435 for use on Cricket Wireless. After manually entering the network settings which I found online (Cricket automatically sent a text message saying that the settings were pushed out, but they didn't show up, so I had to do it manually), I was able to connect fully. Calls, text, data.
Two things to note:
1) I'm on what appears to be the latest update for this phone (4.4.2) and none of the root methods I found online (which used to work on the i435) worked for me (saferoot, towelroot, etc). However, I was able to find a very simple root method here: http://androidmtk.com/replace-kinguser-with-supersu
It uses Kingroot to root the phone. I have used Kingroot in the past on other phones and it leaves a bunch of apps on your phone, none of which I trust, so fortunately the next step in the above process involves removing all of the Kingroot junk using SuperSUMe. No flashing to older kernels or any of the other workarounds are necessary. Just run Kingroot then run SuperSUMe. Two clicks and you're done.
2) I can't get an LTE signal. According to this: https://www.frequencycheck.com/models/G9J4A/samsung-sch-i435-galaxy-s4-mini-lte-samsung-serrano and this: https://forums.att.com/t5/Phone-Device-Upgrades/What-are-AT-amp-T-s-4G-LTE-bands/td-p/4067288 the i435 has the bands necessary to use AT&T's LTE. So is there something I need to do to "enable" LTE on the phone?
It's not the end of the world. I barely use mobile data (regular 4G, which is currently working, would be sufficient for my needs), but if there's some simple way to turn on LTE for the occasional large download I'd like to do it.
