You have an old smart phone data plan, not a non smart phone data plan so you are safe to keep that. The system AT&T uses recognizes the old plan and knows it does not offer that anymore. The system then saves your plan and sets it aside during the upgrade/flow process. If you had a non smartphone data plan and put your sim into an Atrix, you would get a notification sometime after midight that your phone eequires a smartphone data plan.

Big difference being that you actually tried to go and get this grandfather $15/mo unlimited plan, which is no longer available. I got this plan many years ago, before iPhone, and just kept renewing my contract on the same terms, which AT&T was happy about. A year ago they already started doing away with unlimited plans, yet they gladly renewed my contract with unlimited data, even though I used the contract extension subsidy to get a new TouchPro2 from them, right from their store.
So maybe the moral here is that if you have the old plan with unlimited data - u can just keep extending it every 2 years without trouble. Cannot do that for new contracts.

Oh, I've counted on that for last 5 or so years, and don't see why I can't in the future =)

Ah, that does make sense.

Thanks for clearing it up!

You will be converted to the $30 unlimited data plan, the $20 will not provision for 3g internet service on the atrix or any new smartphone. This is also the case if you are coming from an iPhone 2g.

What's this suppose to mean?

Regardless if you have the grandfather plan of smartphone unlimited data, there's another another catch? That you have to be at least 30 dollars?

I mean, personally I don't have to worry, my grandfather unlimited smartphone data plan is the 30 dollar one, but for those who actually have a smartphone data plan for 20 dollars, that would....... unfairly suck.

Like others here I have moved this $20 unlimited data plan from the 8100 to the 8525 to the FUSE by paying full price for the phones. So I expect that will be fine again for the Atrix.

The real question I was asking if the current 3G sim card will work in the Atrix. Remember when 3G came out we needed to get new sims. I know this 4G is HSPA+ so its based on 3G and I assume that the 3G sim will work - just wanted to see if anyone knows for sure.

Thanks!

Shouldn't be an issue at all. You can always get a new SIM if you want to. I think they charge for them now. Back at the time of the 8125 and 8925, I just walked in to the store and asked for 3 SIM cards. They gave them to me, and I walked out. It was so much easier back then...

It really depends on which sim card they use in the atrix. The iPhone 4 has a micro sim. If the atrix uses a micro sim and you have the older one, you will need to get a new one.

Never mind, I just found out that it uses a regular sim. See Here for a shot of the atrix with it's back plate off.

Forgot to mention that the atrix is using HSPA+ which we all know is just faster 3g. Yes, I know they redefined 4g, but still.

It doesn't have LTE.
